• This month’s meeting
of the Grimes County
Greys, Sons of Confederate
Veterans Camp 924, will be
honoring Confederate He-
roes Day, which commem-
orates General Robert E.
Lee’s and General
“Stonewall” Jackson’s
birthdays on Jan. 18. The
Grimes County Greys
meeting will be held at the
Courthouse Annex in An-
derson on Tuesday, Jan. 28,
at 7 p.m.
Mr. Bryan Hext, author
of “A Texan in Gray, will
serve as the guest speaker.
Mr. Hext was born in
Galveston in 1947, went to
La Marque High School
and graduated from U of
Houston in 1971. He served
in the US Army, as a mili-
tary intelligence officer
with the 70 Armor Battal-
ion, 4th Infantry Division.
Afterwards, he returned to
the Houston area as a com-
mercial interior specialist
and became the owner of
Business Furniture Co. in
1981.
Hext moved to
Plantersville in 1982, and,
after selling BFC, built cus-
tom homes as the owner of
Plantex Homes Inc. In
2001, he started USA Prop-
erties Real Estate Co. in
Plantersville, which is now
in the Woodlands.
Hext has studied the
Civil War since graduating
from college and began his
Book “A Texan In Gray” in
2008, which was published
with Amazon in August
2013.
The Jan. 28 meeting
subject will be “A Texan in
Gray,” a family history
about Hext’s ancestor, Pay-
ton Hext, and the 5th Texas
Inf. during the Civil War.
He will discuss why he
wrote the book and his at-
tempt to tell the story of
why 70 percent of the Con-
federate Army (including
Payton) - not being slave
owners - joined that con-
flict.
It is an attempt to pres-
ent an alternative to the re-
visionist history written by
those trying to make our
struggle against a tyrannical
form of government some-
thing other than defending
our homeland.
All persons interested in
southern history are invited
to attend. For more infor-
mation, contact Tom
Haynie at 979-220-3058 or
