Victoria Park gets new playground
Examiner photo by Scott McDonald
George Korpita (second from left) accepts a dedication proclamation from Navasota Mayor Bert Miller,
thanking Korpita for the time and effort put in to raise funds and build a playground at Victoria Park in Nava-
sota. The playground was built and dedicated to Eli River Korpita, son of George and Sarah Korpita (far
right) and Eli’s grandmother, Lynette Korpita. Eli and Lynette both lost their life in an automobile accident
in April 2012. Money was raised locally and matched with a grant to build the park. George said Eli loved
playing, and that his mother, Lynette, always liked to take her grandkids to the playground, and that it only
made sense to build a playground in their memory. John Flores (far left) was one of the approximately 100
in attendance, including many kids who gave the playground a test run that Saturday.
Tax bills show modest increases
Most Grimes County
property owners have re-
ceived 2013 tax bills that
show modest increases
over last year’s amounts
because of the combina-
tion of generally higher
valuations and mostly
steady tax rates.
The Grimes County
Appraisal District recently
put the finishing touches
on mailing about 38,000
tax bills for 11 taxing
units in the county, ac-
cording to Chief Ap-
praiser Bill Sullivan. The
deadline for paying the
2013 taxes is Jan. 31,
2014.
Grimes County’s tax
rate remained unchanged
from last year at
$0.530261 per $100.
The Navasota ISD re-
duced its tax rate from
$1.2110 to $1.1914, while
the City of Navasota
raised its tax rate from
$0.4874 to $0.5000.
The only large tax rate
increase occurred at the
Anderson-Shiro CISD, as
the rate increased from
$1.3800 to $1.4844, in re-
lation to a bond issue ap-
proved by voters earlier
this year.
Tax rates for other tax-
ing units were stable.
The appraisal district
encourages taxpayers to
verify that they have re-
ceived tax bills on all
properties that they own.
Taxpayers paying by
mail are asked to make
their check payable to the
Grimes County Appraisal
District. Payments should
be mailed with the top
portion of the tax state-
ment enclosed to: Grimes
County Appraisal District,
P. O. Box 489 Anderson,
Texas 77830.
Taxes may be paid in
person at the appraisal
district office, at 360 Hill
Street in Anderson. Office
hours are 8 a.m. until
noon, and 1 p.m. to 5
p.m., Monday through
Friday.
Taxpayers can pay on-
line by credit card at
www.grimescad.org with
a 2.5 percent convenience
fee or by e-check with a
$2.50 fee. It takes from
three to five business days
for online credit card
transactions to appear on
the appraisal district’s
records and website.
The appraisal district
may be reached at 936-
873-2163 or
gcad@grimescad.org.
LeFlore,
continued from la
tion, as well as good. It
also sets standards of ed-
ucation for both offices
to improve professional-
ism for the good of the
public.
I feel that I have been
blessed to represent the
people of Grimes
County and have been
honored to do so. I thank
all of you for this honor
and would like to con-
tinue as your Justice of
the Peace, and will ask
for your support and vote
in the upcoming elec-
tion.
John LeFlore
Leman,
continued from la
forward, it is essential we
have someone in this posi-
tion who has both the qual-
ified background, as well
as the desire to protect and
preserve the unique char-
acteristics of our county.
This person must have the
appropriate experience to
help design a proactive,
strategic plan that will at-
tract the type of regional
growth we most desire. I
have been doing this for 16
years, and can bring that
experience to this posi-
tion.”
Leman continued, “As
a conservative, I realize
your hard earned money is
just that - yours! It is im-
perative we spend all tax
dollars wisely, and only
when absolutely neces-
sary, in order to provide
the basic services needed
for the county as we
grow.”
Ben served as President
and C.E.O. of Merrimac
Manufacturing, Inc., until
recently selling the com-
pany to a public corpora-
tion. He co-founded
Merrimac 16 years ago,
and has successfully navi-
gated major growth rates
on a very tight budget,
growing the business from
“just 2 of us in my
mother’s garage,” to over
100 employees, 25 stock-
ing locations around the
world, and a state-of-the-
art manufacturing facility
located right here in
Grimes County.
Ben and his wife,
Christie, live in the Iola
community with their four
children, James (8), Ben Jr.
(6), Luke (4) and Evelyn
(4 months). They are
members of Saint Stanis-
laus Catholic Church in
Anderson.
