NEW DISTRICT IX FARM BUREAU QUEEN — Miss
Cecelia Wharton, black-haired Stephen K. Austin College
co-ed from Timpson is crowned Miss Farm Bureau Queen
of District Thursday night in Baniia ballroom of Hotel
Fredonia in Nacogdoches. Miss Wharton b the daughter
of Mr. and Mra. Cecil Wharton and won the district title
over four other entires. She will represent the district in
the state Farm Bureau convention at San Antonio to be
held in November. Here she is being crowned by Mbs lan-
ds Nelson of Houston county, 1961 district queen. Standing
in the roar is Miss Neil Dorsey of Crocket, runner-up.
Rev. Jose Will Speak at
The Methodic Church
The Rev. Maynando Joae of
the Philippines will be the
guest at a family night cover-
ed dish supper at the First
Methodist Church in Timpson
on Wednesday, September 19.
Rev. dose is a native of the
Philippines and is one of the
outstanding young Methodist
preacher's of that nation. He
has studied at the Wesley
Methodist Seminary in Ohio
and has a good command of
the English language, .
The family night sapper
will be in the fellowship hall
at 7 p. m. and Rev. Jose will
•peak in the sanctuary of the
church at 8 p. m.

NEW EMPLOYEE COTTON
BELT STATE BANK
Mrs. Marion Parker is a
new employee in the book-
keeping department of The
Cotton Belt State Bank. The
young lady comes to the local
bank with some 12 years ex-
perience as a general secre-
tary. She is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hooper of
this community, and graduat-
ed from Timpson High School
in 1947.
Miss Elaine Parker of Luf-
kin, made a recent visit with
Mrs. A. L. Rack, Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Jones and Mrs. Judy
Stoddard cf this city.

Timpson High School
Band Names Officers
The Timpson High School
band held its annual election
for band officers Friday, Aug-
ust 31. Officers named for the
year are:
Paul Franks, president
Bruce Crump, vice-president
Barbara Edwards, secretary
Una Fay* Kimhro, reporter
Aside from taking time out
for electing officers, the band
has been having dally practice
on drills for the coming foot-
ball season. The band b work-
ing toward a drill which will
be performed in Austin, Octo-
ber 6. In addition to the regu-
lar practice during school
hours, director Bobby Goff has
scheduled extra rehearsals at
night. The band majorettes are
also rehearsing for the enter-
tainment they will supply at
the coming games. The band is
working and striving for ano-
ther successful year.
Ford Dealer Goes
to See New Models
Lovb Eakin, local Ford deal-
er, accompanied by his sales-
men, L. E. Barrett, Sherrill
Bailey and L. G. Allen, went
to Galveston Tuesday where
the first showing of the new
1963 Ford cars will be held in
the Moody Center.
The new models will go on
display at the Eakin Motor
Company at an early date. In
the meatime Mr. Eakin an-
nounces he is making room for
the new models In his plant
by offering some real values on
the few remaining models in
stock , also good vaules in used
Suzanne Johnson Receives
Degree at S. F. A. College
Suzanne Johnson received
her Bachelor of Science degree
from S. F. A. College at Nac-
ogdoches on Thursday eve-
ning, August 16. Seventeen
other Shelby County students
received degrees at the same
exercise* The commence-
ment exercise was in the Grif-
fith Fine Arts Auditorium. The
address was given by Dr. Dnr-
wood Fleming of Southwest-
ern University.
Suzanne la a History major
and Government minor, a
graduate of Timpson High
School and daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Doyle Johnaon of the
Arcadia community.
MRS. LOY DEAN McGOWAN
RECEIVES DEGREE
Mrs. Loy Dean McGowan
received her Bl S. degree in
Elementary Education at N.T.-
S.U., Denton on Thursday
night, August 23rd.
Mrs. McGowan is the form-
er Jan Wigley, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Hebert of
this city. She began her teach-
ing activities Monday, Aug-
ust 27 in Richardson where
she is teaching in the Elemen-
tary school. She and Mr. Mc-
Gowan will live in the above
city, he having employment In
Dallas. He is the son of Mr.
and Mm. Youree McGowan of
Timpson.

Opened August 27
Enrolled 507
Joaquin Public Schools op-
ened August 27 for the 1992-
63 sessions. According to Sam
Wood, superintendent, the en-
rollmsnts were: Fellowship,
165; Joaquin Elementary, 157
and Joaquin High School, 185;
making a total of 507 pupils
enrolled the first day. lilts is
twenty-two more than were
enrolled last year.

Under caption 50 Years Ago,
August 22, 1912, is the follow-
ing:
“TIMPSON, Texas — The
first bale of cotton to be gir.ued
and marketed in Shelby Coun-
ty this season was sold in
Timpson yesterday.
■ “It was raised by the Ladies’
Aid of the North Side Baptist
Church and weighed 500
pounds. T. C. Whiteside
bought the. cotton, paying
12 1/3 cents for it. A prem-
num of $25 was given."
Mrs. W. W Jackson
Succumbs; Final Rites
Held Monday
Mrs. W. W. Jackson, 84,
succumbed Sunday morning at
9:50 o’clock at the family
home on North Second Street,
following a long filcea.
The funeral service was held
Monday afternoon at 2:80
o’clock at the First Christian
Church with the pastor. Dr.
W.' B. Oliver, officiating. Bur-
ial was in Woodlawn.
Pallbearers were: Joe
Crocker, L. M. Ward, Jr., Al-
bert Holmes, Frank Jones, D.
P. Billingsley, George Hutch-
erson.
Mrs Jackson was born in
Shelby county, and had resid-
ed in this area ail her life.
Survivors include one son,
Ira Jackson, Timpson: two
daughters, Mm. Mildred
Gaither, Houston; Mrs. Thel-
ma Fielder, Fort Worth; eight
grandchildren^ twenty great-
grandchildren and one great-
great-grandehUd.
Funeral arrangements were
under direction of Taylor
Funeral Home.

Enroll 2,043
CENTER — Center schools
have opened for the fail term
with aa enrollment of 2,013.
At the white elementary
school 1,030 pupils were en-
rolled, while at the white high
school there were 478, making
a total of 1,608 white students.
A total of 940 Negro stud-
ents were enrolled.
Ell Mainer of Tnrnpeon
Dies At Nacogdoches
Nacogdoches, Aug. 30.-
Funeral services for Eli Main-
er, 61, of Houte S, Timpson,
were held Thursday afternoon,
Aug. 80, at 2 o’clcvk in the
Mount Hope Baptist Church
in Cherokee* County with in-
terment in the Mount Hope
Cemetery.
Officiating were the Rev.
Turk Meadors of Wee be* and
the Rev. Wade Hill at Pales-
tine. both Baptist ministers.
Mr. Mainer was a sawmill
worker and had lived ia Timp-
son for the last six years. He
was a member . Baptist
Church.
Survivors in addition to bis
wife are one daughter, Mra.
Bowden Hughes of Timpson,
one sister, Mrs. Kate Barber
of Palestine; one brother, Bil-
lie Mainer of Rusk; and two
grandchildren.

For Football Season
The Timpson Bean, under
direction of Coaches Preston
White and Kenneth Parmley,
are in active training for the
coming football season.
Thirty-three boys - . eleven
of them lettermen, reported
for duty August 20th, and they
will be ready for action in the
opening game scheduled for
September 7th, with the Diboll
Lumberjacks at Diboll.
