Need of 76,001 Tons
of Limestone
Bryan.—During 1961, there
were 182,072 tons of Agricul-
tural limestone applied to the
soils of Bast Texas. Of this
amount, 147,397 tons were ap-
plied under practice A-4 of the
ABC and tor which ABC aid
was given. r
The use of Agricultural
limestone is one of the most
important of the soil building
and conservation practices,
but only a small fraction of
the amount needed annually
is being used. The amount
needed, as estimated by rep-
resentatives. of the agricultur-
al services, is nearly 4 million
tons anually.
Shelby County
The records show tons of
limestone applied to crop and
pasture for soil improvement
and conservation work for
which ASC aid was given to-
taled (approximately) 1,191
tons in 1958; 1.766 in 1959;
2,085 in 1960 ; 3,355 in 1961.
Limestone need is given at
76,001 tons.
OIL LEASING IS
UP IN 'DOCHES
NACOGDOCHES — Oil lea-
sing in Nacogdoches County is
going at a fast pace, some ob-
servers say more extensively
than the splurge of activity in
1949.
At least a dozen oil landmen
were registered at Hotel Fre-
donia and the office of the
county clerk was busy with
lease hunters tracing deed and
lease records.
One landowner said that the
amount of leasing is "enor-
mous" and that a “tremen-
dous” amount of money 'is co-
ming into the county.
Oil companies would release
no official information on the
spurt of leasing, but it was
known that Humble Oil A Re-
fining co.. Union Producing
Co.,.Sun Oil Co., and several
independents are working on
B868. . tr
Spark for the leasing seem-
ed to be an Humble Oil A Re-
fining Co. deep Smackover
wildcat near Trawick in north-
west Nacogdoches County.
The well was down to 11,996
feet at last report, which is
deeper than any test has ever
gone in the county. The well is
planned to reach the Smack-
over formation, which is thou-
ght to be 1,000 or 2,000 feet
tower.
Observers believe, however,
that “something very interest-
ing” has already been found
in the well.
A second test in the county
is being put down near Apple-
jy where Delta Drilling Com-
pany’s No. 1 A. T. Mast was
fishing for drill stem. The well
was down to 3400 feet when s
drill stem broke.

Fishing License
Cases Still
Coming To Court
TYLER, August 11— Came
wardens are still being forced
to file fishing license cases is
justice and county courts, ac-
cording to word received to-
day from Charles Burnette,
Conservation Supervisor of the
Region THREE Game and Pish
Commission office in Tyler.
Begios THREE consists of the
47 counties in Northeast Tex-
as.
“One lake in east Texas has
had 81 cases filed this year,”
stated Burnette, "and still no
end in sight” The new fishing
licenses for the 1962-63 fish-
ing year went on sale at sport-
ing goods stores and from
game wardens and county
clerics on August 22.
A license is required of all
persons between the ages of 17
and 66 who use a rod and real
or net, or who fish outride the
county of their residence,
Fishermen who stay in their
own counties and use tickle
other than a reel, winding de-
vice or net, may fish without a
license. Burnette expressed a
desire that sportsmen remem-
ber the license laws before
they go fishing and meet their
game warden.
Texas fishing licenses sell
for 82.16. Fishermen may pick
up a copy of the 1962-63 game
and fish laws where*ver licen-
ses are sold. These law digests
are furnished at no cost.
Some Texas counties, under
Regulatory Responsibility of
the Game A Fish Commission,
wilt have fishing laws differ-
ent from counties under gen-
eral law. “It is well to know
these laws before going to the
publie fishing waters,” says
Burnette.
Revived As Oil Field
Saa Augustine County has
been returned Wednesday to
the East Texas productive col-
umn with a Cretaceous discov-
ery completion in the south
central part.
H. L. Poole, Houston, scored
the success in a continuation of
an exploration program on a
100,609-acre leasehold. The
find is no. 1 Joe Wade-Long-
bell Lumber Co., Stephen
Thompson survey, three miles
northeast of Broaddus. 11
pumped 62.5 barrels of 87.6
gravity oil per day from 6,880-

Austin chalk. Gas-oil ratio was

Prior production in this
county was some 20 miles
northeast in the old San Au-
gustine field, a Pettit lime area
opened in 1947 and abandoned
in 1949.
