ITS THE LAW
A story they tell on Lincoln
is how he once proved his cU-
ent’s innocence by “impeach-
ing” an eye witness.
Lincoln’s client had stolen a
chicken, the witnere vowed, at
a certain time on a certain
night.
Asked how he could see so
well at night, the witness de-
clared "by the light of the
moon — just as clear as clear.”
Lincoln "impeached” the
testimony with ease by palling
an old almanac out of Ms poc-
ket. It showed that no moon
was up at that time, nor was it
fall on that date.
Trials are hard on everybo-
dy—witnesses and parties a-
like. They often take place
when other way. to settle a
dispute have failed, and there
are hard feelings. But grant-
ing- good faith, people do make
mistakes in what they recall.
After they have told their sto-
ry a few tunes, many are dead
certain—like Lincoln’s
—that they did se
what they say they did.
And an, for the sake of jus-
tice, courts allow each ode to
tent a witness’ reliability.
Sometimes a witness is so ob-
viously prejudiced or so obvi-
ously twisting the facts that
the cross-examiner easily dis-
credits his story.
But often sincere witnesses
tell different stories, and the
jury has a right to know how
much weight to give each. It is
the jury’s sworn duty, in fact,
to weigh the credibility of wit-
ness*. And a good way is to
see how a witness' story hangs
together under fire or chocks
with other known facts.
(This ne wife*turn, prepar-
ed by the State Bar et Texas,
is written to Inform—not to
advise. No person should ever
apply or interpret any law
without the aid of an attorney
who is folly advised concern-
ing the facts involved, because
a slight variance in facts may
:hange the application of the
law.)
CK^aISTS find method
FOR REMOVING INK
FROM OLD NEWSPAPERS
WAYNE, N. J. — Chemists
have found a method for remo-
ving ink frees old newspapers
so the paper cam tie used again,
the American Cynamld Co. an-
nounced today.
The company said it worked
with the Garden State Paper
Co. which originated the pro-
cess that produces about 160
tons of reclaimed newsprint a
day at a plant in New Jersey.
The process involves shred-
ding the paper, reducing it to
a palp and washing out the
ink. A dye then is aaed to re-
store the original whitenem,
and the reclaimed paper is
produced as it would be in a
conventional paper mill.

worms are ;
ton along with the toll worms,
DDT alone will not
sufficient control.
