Mr. and Mrs. Payton were ex-
tremely helpful in detailing areas of
interest held by retirees and other
older citizens. They invited the
committee to visit the Park in D'Hanis
and see the layout of facilities and
activities.
Discussions focused on the center
being one part of an overall program
to attract retirees to the Hondo area.
They ranged over a wide scope of
possible ideas including a RV Park,
efforts to coordinate a "Hondo Is
Senior Friendly" campaign with res-
taurants and other business establish-
ments, and several other good ideas.
In addition to the meeting with the
architect, the committee will hold
public hearings on the center proposal
at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 31 and 5 p.m.
Thursday, June 7. Both will be in the
Council Chamber at City Hall.
Attending the meeting were Tom
Ozgo, City Secretary Vangie Pimen-
tel, Chamber Manager Diane Schif-
fers, John Poemer, Bumis Lawrence,
Patricia Lawrence, Mr. and Mrs.
Payton, Ed Smythe, and Sid Malone.
Other committee members include:
Joe Haegelin, Dr. Everett V incent and
Maurice Webster. Organizations in-
volved in the planning include:
AARP, MEDF and the Nutrition
Center. The action is being coordi-
nated by the Hondo Area Chamber of
Commerce.
The Senior Friendly Committee
First met approximately three weeks
ago to begin discussions on this and
other projects designed to attract retir-
ees to this area. The public is invited
to attend all meetings.

"Fiesta" was the theme of the May
9, annual youth banquet at St. Paul's
Lutheran Church.
The Women of the Church honored
the Senior high youth, their sponsors,
teachers and Pastor with a Mexican
dinner. The hall was decorated with
brightly colored balloons, and big
crepepaper flowers and cascarones
decorated the tables.
Danny Neuman, Julie Winkler,
Heather Beckett, Nancy Heinlein and
Rachel Brucks were recognized as
Graduating Seniors of 1990. Other
youth attending were Tanya Sisneros,
Melody Beyer, Christi Beckett, Mark
Reus, Bart Borgens, Jeff Wurzbach,
Jason Nester and Daryl Saunier.
The evening ended with a treasure
hunt. Four teams were given clues to
decipher and solve. The clues led
them all over town and back to the
church where the treasure was found.
A great time was had by all.
