TRASH PICK-UP...Many Hondo residents, Including Gerardo
Valasquez, have’begun picking up their own bulky trash. The City
o! Hondo began their semi-annual clean-up campaign in October
but months later the trash has still not been picked up by Hondo
Disposal. Hondo City Councilman Arturo Barrientes has requested
a special council meeting be held today, Thursday, Dec. 21, at 10:30
a.m., to discuss the problem. “This is a very big problem. City crews
were used Monday to go around with a front-end loader and dump
truck to pick-up trash. These are more tax dollars being used to do
Hondo Disposal's job.*
New math class started at
Hondo High School
The December 18 Hondo ISD
School Board of Thistees meeting was
short, with only seven
items on the agenda.
• The board heard
comments from
teacher Cindy Jones J|
on a problem develop- f ■
ing with high school
student’s math scores.
“Algebra students scores are way
below normal this year,” Jones said.
“About 45 students (most of them
freshmen just coming from the
eighth grade) have a grade point av-
erage of I elow 60 percent. We’d
like the board to consider ad ding a
Fundamentals of Algebra class to
give these students a chance to re-
ceive a half credit for local credits,
otherwise they will fail and get no
credit at all. These students have no
chance to pass the course this year.”
The board approved the class, with
the stipulation that the parents be no-
tified by letter of the impending spring
class and that the parents agree to their
child being placed in the class.
• The board received the financial
reports for November from Superin-
, . lendent Doug
i^i>s Coleman. The re-
\J port shows the
n , district is doing an
1709 r(A outstanding job of
• , collecting taxes.
• The board
adopted a new Bloodborne Pathogens
Exposure Control Plan required by
state law. The plan trains coaches,
nurses and trainers on the proper pro-
cedure when coming in contact with
blood and bodily fluids.
• The board accepted a bid for com-
puter lab and distance learning tables
in the amount of $7,972.98 from Au-
dio Visual Aids of San Antonio.
• The board was given the Aca-
demic Excellence Indicator System
Report that show HISD was rated as
Academically Acceptable.
In order to acheive this rating the
schools must have 50 percent of the
students passing each subject area
and a drop out rate no higher than
six percent.
The parents of a 15-year-old special
skills student at Honda High School,
have some serious concerns about their
daughter’s school program.
The mother said she was recently
informed by a parent of another child
in the same class that one student
bathed the other at school. Upon in-
vestigation of the incident, mother
discovered that the girls’ male
teacher had been in the room with
the two girls instead of a female aide
“One student should not be bath
ing another under any circum
stances,” She said. “I have also
found out that tjbe students have
been taken off campus without
parental consent. The school also
had promised that a female aide
would be with the children at all
times. She was not there during the
shower. Special Education teacher
Jerry Miller was.”
The parents brought their concerns
to the attention of school officials
during an Admission, Review and
Dismissal (ARD) committe meeting
on Dec. 12. These include:
• Students have taken care of an
other student’s hygiene needs.
• Students are not eating in the caf-
eteria.
• Permission slips for field trips
were not being used.
On Dec. 13, Hondo Independent
School District officials informed
them that the teacher, Mr. Miller, was
no longer with the district, and that
they had made a change in hopes to
regain the parents’ trust. Beginning
Jan. 8, Margareta Taylor will be tak-
ing the life skills class at the high
school. Taylor has had many years
of experience with this student at
McDowell School.
After investigating the parent’s
concerns, the school replied:
• That one student bathing another
did happen on a few occasions this
semester, when both female assis-
tants were not scheduled in the room.
The school reportedly proposed to
adjust the female assistants’ sched-
ules so one would be with the stu-
dents at all times.
• That the students do eat in the caf-
eteria and their classroom The
school said the students will eat all
meals in the cafe.'eria during regu-
larly scheduled meal times
• That permission for a field trip
to the Nutrition Center was not se-
cured prior to the trip, however a sec-
ond trip to the Nutrition Center was
taken after the teacher received per-
mission slips from the parents.
The school informed them that par-
ent permission slips would he se-
cured prior to field trips following
district policy.
Superintendent Doug Coleman’s
reply to questions regarding the mat-
ter was, “Mr. Miller resigned from the
school after teaching Special Educa-
tion for three years.”
