TREMENDOUS JOBS
...is the only way to describe the
efforts of Diane Wolff and Mar-
garet Bailey in connection with the
Medina County Agriculture Fair
coming up Saturday.
Diane has chaired the overall
effort to produce what looks like
will be an outstanding event for
our county.
Margaret has headed up the
parade and from all indications
will have one of the finest to be
seen anywhere.
It has been their guidance, their
long hours of work, their dedi-
cation to getting the job done and
theirenthusiasm that will produce
Saturday’s activities.
And although both justly de-
serve lasting accolades, there
are many, many others whose
efforts have been absolutely
necessary to make Saturday’s
event possible. Come Saturday
there will also be many others who
will become important parts of the
fair.
So to Diane, Margaret and all
the others I say on behalf of
everyone in the county, "Thank
You for a tremendous job.”
COUNTY FAIRS
...are traditions in many
counties throughout every state in
our nation, traditions steeped in
history.
County fairs bring people to-
gether in a common cause, the
cause of honoring agriculture, the
backbone of our nation ever since
the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth
Rock.
They weld a bond of friendship
among the people of a county as
each shares with the other an
understanding of what each does
in the scheme of life as a worker
and as a human being. They help
forge a strong feeling of pride
among all people for the accom-
plishments of county citizens as a
whole.
Medina County citizens have not
enjoyed a county fair since about
1932. They banded together in
1928 to dedicate the Medina
County Fairgrounds west of
Hondo, then a short four years
later they allowed a good thing to
fade into oblivion. Today few
people can tell you when the last
fair was held.
The hope is that interest in
Saturday’s big event will burn so
strong and deep in the breasts of
Medina County citizens that we
can once again share with each
other that special feeling of
“family” that comes from an
annual county fair.
The effort has been exerted, the
interest is high and the Good Lord
willing we will all have a wonder-
ful experience Saturday-an
experience that could turn in to an
annual sharing and not become
just one more memory of a project
we started and let die.
R.C. BLESS
...the owner of the New Frontier
Restaurant deserves our special
"thanks for the two memorable
pictures irtcluded in this week’s
paper.
The two show scenes back in
1928 and 1932 [we think] when
Medina County citizens supported
a County Fair.
We hope they bring back plea-
sant memories to all who might
remember. To those who don’t
remember^we sincerely hope they
spark an interest to come out
Saturday and enjoy our special
get-together.
View the parade which kicks off
at 10 a.m. and then come on out to
the City Park and make a day of
joining us in the most fun you'll
have in a long time.

Join us at County
Fair on Saturday
If excitement and interest turn
into attendance the Medina County
Agriculture Fair Saturday will be
one of the biggest events staged here
in a long time.
Chairperson Diane Wolff says that
"people all over the county are
talking about the event sponsored by
the Hondo Chamber of Commerce to
show appreciation for the agriculture
industry.”
The fair offers a wide variety of
things designed to spark the interest
of everyone. It will have FFA and
4-H livestock judging, agriculture
crops exhibits, a women's division
featuring canned goods, baked
edle crafts, quilt-
goods hand and neec

Owls open season Friday
7
By Terry Teague
The season begins for real this
Friday in Hondo against the always-
physical Billies of Fredericksburg.
Fredericksburg’s offense under
coach Carlin Wicker runs from an I
formation or split backfield.
They run the option play quite
well, according to Coach David
Howard. As usual, the Billie are big,

A special meeting has been called
for the Hondo Area Economic Cor-
poration, according to President
John Melton. '
"We will meet at 7:30 p.m. on

Building," he said.
Data reports will be given and
hopefully compiled according to
Melton.
but have a little more speed than last
year.
Thus far in five games Hondo has
won all but two against the Billies.
Every game, except one, in ’76, has
been decided by a touchdown or less
and this one will probably be no
different.
Coach Howard sees it as another
typically hard-fought game, as has
been the history of the series. When
asked about the scrimmage last week
with Floresville, Howard said the
Owls improved over last week’s
game.
‘The Tigers’ defease did a good job
aghast our run, and our offense just
was not consistent enough,” Howard
added “Now as far as the Owl’s
defense was concerned,” said*
Howard, “we did a good job and we
also made mistakes, but overall the
scrimmage helped us."

Todd Riddell, a sophomore, has been
