Dear Anvil Her lad:
We want to express our
sincere thanks to you for
the support you gave for
our Play Day in support of
the Medina County Associ-
ation for Exceptional
Children.
With your help we were
able to raise over $400.00 to
contribute to the school in
Hondo. We could not have
done it without you.
Once again, thank you so
much. But more important,
the children at the school
thank you.
Sincerely,

Printing corporation
plans announced
Formation of a new printing
corporation by Hondo and Pleasan-
ton newspaper owners was announ-
ced this week.
The company, South Texas Press,
Inc., was chartered by the state
earlier this year, and a building was
purchased in Hondo August 9, where
the plant will be located.
Remodeling work on the budding
is expected to begin in September.
The budding owned by Mr. and Mrs.
Milton Rath, was orginally budt
to house an automobile agency and
garage. It is located across the street
From Chapman Grain, Inc., and is on
14th Street and Avenue N, directly
behind Rath Auto Parts, which will
continue in business as before.
Incorporators of the new business
are William Berger, who purchased
the Hondo Anvd Herald in 1946, and
William B. Wdkerson, who bought
the Pleasanton Express in 1975, a&r
selling his interest in the Comanche
Chief, where he had worked for
many years in his family's newspaper
business.
First customers for the new firm
will be the Hondo Anvd Herald and '
the Pleasanton Express. Other news-
ii ■ -papers may be printed later.

FOOTBALL SEASON
...is here and that fact becomes
more apparent Friday night when
the Hondo Owls host the Freder-
icksburg BUlies at Barry Field.
Over the years tjie Anvil Herald
has published a "football page”
that has proven popular with the
players, the coaches, the students
and the fans.
We are doing so again this year
and invite any individual or
business person to join us in
promoting our school, students
and players who make this game
so popular here.

Anvil Herald office today
(Labor Day). I can’t seem to
shake the feeling that I'm
working on a Sunday. The
streets are nearly deserted,
the Courthouse is quite and
empty, and the only pe-
destrians are school-aged
children.
I guess it’s only fitting
that we at the newspaper
office are working today-
after all, it is Labor Day
and we are laboring! (BKL
may disagree with my last
statement, however.)
Unless you are blind,

case you wouldn’t be read-

by now obviously noticed

Herald is just chock full ofv
new items, advertisements
and photographs publiciz-
ing this Saturday’s first
Medina County Fair in
recent years.
What an event it’s bound
to be! I've never been to a
County Fair before, and I’m
looking forward to this one.
one.
There are so many
events and areas of compe-
tition planned that I think a
special award ought to be
bestowed upon anyone with
enough endurance to just
waten everything that’s
been planned-if it can be
done!
We enjoyed visiting with
relatives who were in town
for the holiday weekend,
and, typical of our family
gatherings, consumed vast
quantities of food.
My sister-in-law, Frances
Vincent, managed to mini-
mize our misgivings about
over eating when we are all
so weight-conscious,
though.
She told us, “Fating right
is just a question of mind
over matter. If you don't
mind, it doesn't matter.”
I’ll have another scoop of
ice cream, please.

...are always confusing to read
and understand and the ones
covering late hour permits on both
the sale and consumption of alco-
holic beverages take the cake.
But I believe we finally have it
down so that we will agree on one
two main suspects.
The City Council of Hondo can
write an ordinance authorizing
late hours-until 2 a.m.-for mixed
drink establishments like the Sun-
down Saloon. Right now it would
cover the sale of alcoholic bever-
ages in that one place because it is
the only one we have. Should,
however, additional mixed drink
places be opened they would be
covered by the same ordinance.
Now for the second point where
the information we had last week
disagreed with the interpretation
of the Alcoholic Beverage
Commission. This one deals with
consumption, not sale.
Such an ordinance passed by the
City Council-in addition to allow-
ing the sale of alcoholic beverages
in mixed drink places-would also
allow the consumption of alcoholic
beverages in any public place until
2:15 a.m.
STATE STATUTES
And I would like to hasten to
explain that this does not make
the head counsel for the ABC out
to be wrong, even though it is in
contradiction to what we quoted
him as saying last week. This
simple answer is that the question
we asked him /as as confusing as
one of the state statues covering
the subject. His answer to our
question was correct, but our
question did not include the entire
spectrum covered by the issuance
of late hour permits.
Now that we have the statutes
and interpretations quoted
corrected-my fingers are crossed-
I hope everyone understands it.
No matter the confusion. I still
haven’t changed my mind. I
believe the City Council should
pass the ordinance so that the
Sundown can apply and hopefully
get a late hour permit from the
ABC.
Anyone who disagrees and
would like to express their views
so that the public might know
them may do so by writing me a
letter and signing, their name to it.
I would be happy to print all that I
receive.

*Scnool opened this year
at Hondo' High with the
usual excitement and
expectation. Classes
started without too many
mix-ups and things have
settled down into the usual
school pattern.
The 1980 seniors receiv-
ed their rings this Wednes-
day and made sure that the
entire high school saw and
admired each individual
ring.
This year at H.H.H. Mr.
Tim Coyle is heading the
English 4 classes formerly
taught by Mrs. John Milam.

During the summer he was
asked if he would leave his
current position and teach
English at the 12th grade
level. After teaching at the
8th grade level for 4 years
he felt that it was an
opportunity which offered
different situations and
challenges. His first class of
8th grade students would
make up his senior English
class and he looked upon
teaching them again as an
honor.
When asked how he felt
after his first week of
teaching, Mr. Coyle replied,
“It was all very different
and new. Instead of pre-
paring 8th graders for high
school, I am preparing 12th
graders for college. I am
teaching a class of young
adults now and I really
enjoy it, but I also miss the
constant activity found only
in the 8th grade class-
room.”
This was--not only his
first year of teaching a
senior English course but
also his first experience at
teaching at the nigh school
level.
This
year he plans to
