PUBLIC FORUM
Dear Editor:
I submit the following fact and
opinion. Julie D. Smith is my
step-daughter. She was attempt-
ing to cross Hwy. 69 to reach
the elementary school where she
is employed. Although she was
wearing dark clothing, this was
an unfortunate accident.
Julie is in rehab at Mother
Frances Hospital in Tyler. She is
improving daily and is in good
spirits. She is expected to be there
from three weeks to a month.
I feel like the state trooper’s
report was incomplete and not
investigated properly. This stretch
of the highway has claimed mul-
tiple lives, both human and ani-
mal. I would encourage any and
all law enforcement to make their
presence known, not just during
“school zone times” but anytime,
day or night.
In closing I would like to
extend a heartfelt thank you to
Champion EMS, the Emory Vol-
unteer Fire Department, the Rains
County Sheriff’s Office, RISD
Superintendent John Rouse and
especially Angie Trull and her
staff at the elementary school for
their kindness and support.

Senator Deuell was guest speaker and gave the general condition of
the state’s budget with emphasis on the need to vote “yes” for Propo-
sition 6 in the November 5 election.
