Joshua police are seeking
applicants to participate in its
Citizens’ Police Academy. Eli-
gible applicants must reside
or work in the Joshua city
limits or own a business in the
city of Joshua and must be at
least 18 years old. The acade-
my takes place once each year.
It will begin Jan. 8, 2013.
The Citizens’ Police Acad-
emy was formed to provide
enough information to resi-
dents so that they may make
informed judgments about the
police department and police
activity. It is further hoped
that the instruction will in-
crease police awareness, to
dispel suspicions and miscon-
ceptions and to increase po-
lice/community rapport. The
department, in turn, becomes
more aware of the feelings and
concerns of the community.
The class offers 30 hours of
instruction designed to give the
public a working knowledge of
the JPD’s personnel and poli-
cies. Classes take place one day
per week for 10 weeks and on

Instruction is comprehen-
sive, covering a different area
of the department each week,
as well as other city services.
Officers, police personnel
and city staff conduct each
instructional block.
Academy classes cover
such topics as training, com-
munications, criminal investi-
gations, DWI procedures, ju-
venile law, the special response
team and special crimes unit.
Instruction in these disciplines
include lectures, demonstra-
tions and practical application.

plying for admission to the Citi-
zens’ Police Academy, you may
obtain an application from the
city website or pick one up from
the Joshua Police Department,

Graduates of the class are
invited to join the alumni as-
sociation. The purpose of the
association is to support the
police department with vol-
unteers during special events,
fundraising for special pur-
chases and to assist with pub-
lic awareness about the func-
tions of the department.
