Rodeo festival, queens
contest taking shape
The Rodeo Queen and Prin-
cess contests and the Go Rodeo
Festival are taking shape.
The events are being planned
around the annual Sheriff’s
Posse Labor Day Rodeo which
occurs on Saturday and Sunday
nights of Labor Day weekend
each year.
There are 16 young ladies
vying for four titles to rep-
resent the Franklin County
Sheriffs Posse for the coming
year. The contestants are sell-
ing tickets for an opportunity
to win a $250 merchant card.
Tickets for the contests’
modeling and interview com-
petition dinner at 6 p.m. on Sat-
urday, Aug. 25 are now avail-
able for $10 each. The dinner
includes chicken spaghetti,
green beans, a salad, drink and
dessert. Reserve a dinner seat
before 7 p.m. Monday, Aug.

A dance will begin activities
for the weekend on Friday,
Aug. 31 at the Young Fanners
Pavilion, which is adjacent to
the rodeo arena on FM 115.
Games will begin at 7 p.m. and
the dance at 8 p.m. Everyone
will continue to kick up their
heels until the band or attend-
ees are too tired to continue.
On Saturday morning, a
parade will kick off events,
beginning at 11 a.m. Immedi-
ately following the parade, the
All American Cowgirl Chicks
will be available for photos and
autographs on the downtown
plaza. The Franklin County
Historical Association will
provide all-you-can-eat chuck-
wagon beans and combread on
a donation basis. The members
of the Franklin County 4-H
Club will be selling ice cold
beverages.
The events at the annual
Sheriff’s Posse Labor Day
Rodeo will take place on Sat-
urday and Sunday evenings at
the rodeo arena on Hwy. 115
between the south service road
of 1-30 and Hwy. 21.

County.
The temperature of 107°
on July 30 was wanner than
the temperature of 104° re-
corded on the same day in
1986. Highs were recorded
in the 100s for eight days,
in the 90s for 17 days, and
in the 80s for six days. The
average high temperature for
the month was 95.7°.
No record lows were re-
corded in July. Lows were
recorded in the 70s for 30
days and in the 60s for one
day. The average low tem-
perature for the month of
July was 73.7°.

was recorded in Franklin
County in July 2012.

MV Music's 2012-13 season announced
Music lovers will not want
to miss this season’s per-
formances presented by the
Mount Vernon Music Asso-
ciation at the Music Hall.
Join the association during
their annual membership drive
and receive a discount rate for
tickets for all performances.
Memberships are available on
five different levels of giving.
Memberships are avail-
able as follows: Associate -
$25-$49; Friends - $50-$149,
Patrons - $150-$499, Bene-
factors - $500 to $2999 and
Underwriter - $3,000 or above.
Accommodations can be made
for those who want to give on
a monthly basis, too.
Those joining at the Friends
level or above are eligible to
vote in the annual membership
meeting in March. Tickets for
the seven regular season per-
formance events with seven
alternative site concerts are
available to members of all
levels at a 34 percent savings.
A special fund-raising event
at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25
with the "N’Awlins Gumbo
Kings” will set the mood for
the regular season with a va-
riety of music. Tickets for this
one time special gala are $25
per person, and $10 for chil-
dren under age 12. This event
includes a silent auction and
gourmet reception prepared
by members of the Key Club
of Mount Vernon.

- April 6, 2013, 7:30 p.m.,
the American Horn Quartet;

- May 12, 2013, 3 p.m.,

There will be a special free
Summer Children’s Concert
at 2 p.m. Monday, June 17,
2013. The concert will tell a
musical story of Leopold the
Frog. Musicians will be Mark
Miller, Dan Sigale and Karen
and Kevin Hall.

Bo Wafford received the Exotic Wildlife Hall of Fame award
Wafford in Hall of Fame
Bo Wafford of Mount Ver-
non was recently inducted
into the Exotic Wildlife Asso-
ciation Hall of Fame.
Mr. Wafford was recog-
nized and received a plaque
at the Trophy Game Records
of the World 34th Annual
Awards Banquet in Kerrville
on July 21.
The Exotic Wildlife As-
sociation is North America’s
oldest and most successful
organization of non-native
wildlife breeders and manag-
ers. The EWA is now recog-
nized as the leading advocate
and defender of animal-owner
rights and for-profit species
conservation.
In 2002, the EWA and Tro-
phy Game Records organiza-
tion presented the first Hall of
Fame award.
Mr. Wafford’s career in the
hunting industry has spanned
over 30 years. He has put
tireless hours into promoting,
preserving, and defending the
hunting heritage manifests
with well over 300 guided en-
tries in Trophy Game Records
of the World.
He served as the manager
of the YO Onioncreek Ranch
in Buda, Tex., from 1982 to
1994. He currently serves as
an exotic hunting guide at
the YO Ranch in Mountain
Home, Tex. He started as a
guide at the ranch in 1986.
In the years from 1982-96,
Mr. Wafford was named the
Guide of the Year three times.
The award is presented to the
guide with the most animals
in the Top 10 Animals of the
Record Book.
