The Van Independent
School District Board
of Trustees met Oct.
21 to present a procla-
mation signed by Gov.
Rick Perry designating
October as “Principal’s
Month in Texas.”
Principals Jeff
Hutchins, Jason John-
son, Shelby Davidson,
Marty Moore, Jonnie
Smith, Superintendent
Don Dunn and school
board President Charles
McCaffree were present
and accepted a copy of
the proclamation.
Van Intermediate
students Tierney My-
ers, Kepler Multaup,
Tucker Boyett, Lazarus
Caldwell and Jasmine
Tompkins, who were
featured in the No Ex-
cuses University pro-
gram, led the Pledge of
Allegiance.
Members of the board
and school administra-
tors presented awards
for employees of the
month at each campus.
Employees for October
2013 were Shawnna
Otten, J.E. Rhodes
Elementary; Mandy
Moore, Van Interme-
diate; Ryan Bender,
Van Middle; Kathy Mc-
Carty, Van Junior High;
and Bobby Skeeters,
Van High School.
Superintendent Don
Dunn presented atten-
dance figures from the
first six weeks (Aug.
26-Oct. 3.) Van Junior
High had the highest
campus attendance re-
cord with 98.11 per-
cent; J.E. Rhodes El-
ementary, first grade,
had a rate of 96.77 per-
cent; Van Intermediate,
third grade boasted a
97.51 percent atten-
dance rate; Van Middle
School, fourth grade,
ranked with a record
of 98.14 percent; Van
Junior High, eighth
grade, came in at 98.26
percent; and Van High
School, ninth grade,
capped at 97.79 percent
attendance rate.
The board of trustees
also voted to continue
supporting the Texas
Taxpayer and Student
Fairness Coalition.
The board approved

$0.50 cents amounts
to about $1,500 which
will help cover legal
fees.
The student code of
conduct and student
handbook was also up-
dated by the board. A
recent problem with a
student bringing a va-
por-style smoking de-
vice was circumvented
with the amendment to
the handbook and code
of conduct.
Superintendent
Dunn also updated the
board on the recent
changes the iPad initia-
tive has invoked. “We
are already starting to
see a change in our stu-
dents. They are engaged
in the iPad and there is
a definite decrease of
classroom disturbances.
The teachers are just as
excited as the students.
It takes the teachers
a short period of time
to grade electronically
through the iPad. It
saves countless hours
of work time and they

Seventh and eighth
grade students received
iPads Oct. 18 funded
by a $100,000 grant
from the Chevron
Corporation.
Danny Morrow up-
dated the board on the
push for online stu-
dent registration. “As
of right now, we are in
the process of collect-
ing data in hope that
next summer current
students will be able to
enroll in classes online.’
The board went on to
approve the following:
—Tax resale property
resolution documents;
—Accepted the 2013
tax roll levy;
—Approved new bat-
ting cage covers for the
baseball and softball
fields;
—Approved the repair
of a sewer system at the
administration building,
work will start over the
Thanksgiving holiday.
A ARP driver safety
course planned
AARP Driver Safety
Program and Tundra
Baptist Church, 2313
FM 1651, is sponsoring
a driver safety class from
8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 4 in
Canton.
The course is primarily
designed for drivers ages
50 and above and helps
drivers learn to compen-
sate for the effects of ag-
ing on eyesight, hearing
and reflexes.
Most participants will
qualify for an insurance
premium reduction of up
to 10 percent, organizers
of the class said.
Cost for the class
is a nominal fee for
materials.
To enroll, contact Mar-
vin Edwards at 903-848-
7023. This will be the
last class offered this year
and enrollment is limited,
Edwards said.
