Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor:
I would like to thank the Whitewright Volunteer Fire
Department volunteer firefighters and Chief Clouse
who served a 96- square mile area with expediency
and proficiency.
Firstly a salute to the volunteer firefighters who
served with diligence and passion. Who were the first
to arrive to roadway accidents. Who left their families
to help others. Who trained local school children about
fire prevention, what to do in case of fire, how to use
fire extinguishers and to always have two ways out.
Who took money from their own pockets for essentials
that the city, county and donations didn’t cover.
Equally, a salute to Chief Clouse who was dedicated
to improve the Whitewright Volunteer Fire Department
ISO rating - without financial backing - in order to
improve the safety of the citizens and reduce property
insurance rates. Who arranged funding to educate
school children and for extensive firefighter training
including emergency medical that saved lives and
reassured victims while waiting for the ambulance.
Who, before West, had firefighters trained on risk-
assessment before entering burning structures.
It is not obvious how many hours this group of
volunteers and their leader gave.
There is nothing residents can do about the city’s
decision, but grieve the loss of service by the 125-year
old Whitewright Volunteer Fire Department and an
exemplary fire chief.
Respectfully,
EllaFitzbag

Dear Editor:
As a citizen of Whitewright, I would like to express my
thanks to the now defunct volunteer fire department.
For well over 100 years they were all we had and it
was a comfort to know they where there, some taking
time from their paying jobs, some giving up their
retirement times and some just giving up private time
and rest. I have seen many of them on Monday nights
at the fire station, training, meeting, or whatever
they were doing, but it was for our protection and I
appreciate it.
How many times have we watched them at the four-
way stop sign collecting funds for the department? Or
selling chickens that they had cooked, the chili cook-
off, or the pancake breakfast? They were raising funds
to help have the means to protect us!
I don’t presume to know the business end of this
matter, but I feel it would be remiss if I don’t say at
least thanks to all volunteers, past and present.
How many of you would be willing to devote all that
time, for free? Not me!
With much gratitude,
Wilma Ballard

safety services for the city.
The council discussed replacing the
bay doors of the fire department with
electric door openers. Councilman
James Shiplet stated that these doors
are 36 years old and there is a need to
replace them with electric doors so the
department can be secured when the
trucks leave the station without slowing
the department’s response time down.
The council will seek funds from the
Type B board and asked to have this
item on a future board agenda.
The press release also expressed
appreciation to the members of
the Whitewright Volunteer Fire
Department. “With the City’s transition
to the new Fire Department, Mayor
Goodson also wanted to remember those
who have protected the community
over the years. ‘The Council and I
want to express our appreciation to the
members of the Whitewright VFD for
the time, effort, and long history of fire
protection and emergency services they
have provided this area as volunteers
within the community,’ he said. ‘No
question, their contributions have been
significant.’”
