TBE PARISH POST
Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary
OLD LAMAR
If you drive out from Corpus
Christ! via North Beach, pass
Backport and leave the long-
bridge over Copano Bay behind
you, you find an idyllic place,
between Aransas Bay and the Na-
tional Park, known -to people as
“Lamar.'* Old-timers know this
place; they know the history of
old Lamar. It is the place where
boats used to come in; where peo-
ple settled and built a little
town; where they, hundred years
ago, built a small church, as
centre for the Catholic communi-
ty.
Lamar has lost its former sig-
nificance, has become a lonesome
place; but just because of its soli-
tude, it is an idyllic place. It is
attractive for those who are tired
of the hustle and bustle of the
big ci>_y; it is attractive also for
religious people who feel closer
to God in an place where nature's
voice heard; it is attractive
also for young people who are
eager to prepare for work in the
vineyard of the Lord.
No wonder Divine Providence
directed a religious community,
the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary
af the Catholic Apostolate, to
this place to build their Mother-
house there. The house is under
construction, and the Sisters
are looking forward to the time
when they can move in-
The building will be called
"House Schoenstatt’ named after
the original matherhouse in Ger-
many- Of still greater importance
will be another building, a repli-
ca of the shrme of the Mother
Thrice Admirable and Queen of
Schoenstatt- As the Church in
general offers a home for the
human soul in this vale of tears,
as the Church performs miracles

of transformation in human souks acter. It i?, particularly adapted
through the administration of the | to serve present-day needs. The
Holy Sacraments, as the Ghurch j institute was founded in 1026-
sends forth the noblest of its
members as apostles to work for
the salvation of souls,—so will
this little shrine stand as a bea-
con in a world ’and time of up-
roar and evil* The Mother Thrice
Admirable will make people feel
at home in her shrine; as Media-
trix at all graces. She will work
in human souls and transform
them and, after they are trans-
formed, send them, to call -to her
sanctuary more and more devo-
tees for the growth and fortifica-
tion of the holy Church and for
the greater glory of God.
The Sisters will enjoy house
chapel as their home where
they prepare for a life to be
spent in apostolic activity, they
will enjoy their vacation, their
annual retreat and times of
studies and continued training
in this solitary place, but they
wilt be happy to see other peo-
ple come to the shrine of the
Mother Thrice Admirable and
experience her motherly love
and care, her royal dignity and
power, her mighty intercession.
The community of the Schoen-
statt Sisters of Mary of -the Ca-
tholic Apostolate is a new type
of sisterhood with a strongly
marked Marian 4nc| apostolic j^har-
Accordingr to the founder's idea of
the “(lew man and ttie new socie-
ty,” a necessity to create a better
world, from the beginning work
was directed towards the aim that
the members should combine the
high striving of the religious for
a life dedicated to God alone with
a courageous living amidst the
dangers a worldly pagan en-
vironment, where they are ex*
posed to all the difficulties of the
ordinary lay person- Therefore no
petition for ecclesiastical recogni-
tion was made until the late
Holy Father Pope Pius XII re-
cognized »n. the new institutes the
stirring of a new holy spring in
the Church. In March 194T he
raised these institutes to canoni-
cal status by the Apostolic Con-
stitution "Provida Mater Eccle-
sia-’ Shortly thereafter, in 1948,
the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary
received ecclesiastical approval as
a secular institute-
Secular institutes are to be re-
garded as the latest step In the
development of the religious
communities. Religious orders
started with a solitary contem-
plative life; later foundations
tried to combine a contempla-
tive life with apostolic work-
They did nq longer flee the
ie^ did
f
world; they tried to conquer it
for God. Works of charity be-
came essential for many reli-
ligious congregations* The secu-
lar institutes venture not only
to engage in apostolic and cha-
ritable activities, but also to
live in the world side by side
with the lay-person in order to
have more possibilities to in-
fluence this world of ours.
The Schoenstatt Sisters of
Mary especially strive to edueate
womanhood, thereby assisting the
Church in her mission to create
and preserve Christlikeness in
the individual and the communi-
ty. The Blessed Mother is their
model; rilie who is the unique re-
presentation of redeemed humani-
ty, possessing all the virtues of
womanhood in a perfect manner
and therefore the great Educator
of all races and generations. How
much this style of religious life
attracted young generous people
is proved by the fact that the
community grew since 1926 to a
membership of almost 2500. The
Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary hope
that also in this country young
girls will be called to take an
active part in their great mission
to contribute towards the renewal
of the world in the service of the
Mother Thrice Admirable and
Queen of Schoenstatt-
