A KSBLIGIOUK VOCATION—
ary future iiapj.tness
Kewt Smith
As I sil clown to write this
essay, I think—Have I ever
really considered entering the
priesthood?
The thought has crossed my
mind sevovral times but I
have never thought seriously
about it- Entering the priest-
hood would mean giving up a
lew things for instance, living
with your parents. But think
of ail the new friends a per-
son can malcc in the seminary.
A boy doesn’t have to give up
sports or the other things
Mhich he enjoys. When one isf
a priest he is an instrument, of
salvation. It is his hands
which touch Jesus Christ’s own
Body and Blood everyday in,
tfie Mass. It is his hands
which hapthte babies and re-
move from their souls original
sin lie is the one who gives
Communion to the faithful and
Extreme Unction to the dying...
Nov/ the question arises, why-
do men leave the ordinary
everyday life to become priests
of God?
Sceptics ask this question for
religion to them has no real
meaning. To him the priest-
hood is hut a great folly,
something to make fun of.
But no man can be as wrong
as he. Men enter the priest-
hood to save souls and do
God’s will. They are always
working to bring new or inac-
tive members into 'the church.
The life of a priest is some1-
times very hard, for instance,
going out on a sick call late in
a cold, dreary night- He doesn't
like to get up to say 6:30 Mass
early in the morning, nor does
he enjoy sitting in the! confes-
sional all Saturday afternoon,
but he does it all for the love
of God. A priest sometimes
makes mistakes for instance,
he may forget to get a host for
Mass or forget to set the
alarm clock for 6:30 Mass, Like
you and I, he is human and it
is natural t° make a few mis-
takes every once? in awhile,
Tlie need for priests Is evor-
increasing. We could use 35,000
priests in Texas ftlone, not
considering the other states.
The trouble is that there are
not enough vocations right
hero in the U. S. A. We have
to send t« Ireland for priests,
and that is really a shame
that out of 119,000,000 Ameri-
cans we can’t even Ibid
enough priests for mu* country.
Someday I hope that T may be
» priest of God and I hope
that there will be many more
with a mutual feeling toward
this problem. This is my way
of quoting Pope Plus X, To
restore all things in Christ-”
A REUGlCfCS VOCATION
MY FUTURE HAPPINESS
Theresa Mae Eagiin
To give up everything to be-
come a Sister would not be too
much for me to do for the love
of God. In renouncing world-
ly joys X Would,.I feel sure e-
ven find much happiness. Was
not Sfc. Augustine said, "Thou
has made us .for Thyself, O
Lord, and our hearts cannot
rest until they rest in Thee?”
Let uae take a trip into the
future, As a Sister my life
would be made up of prayer,
work, and recreation. I can
imagine myself joyfully per-
forming the spiritual and cor-
poral works of mercy in a his-
pltal or school,-1 love God, and
I see Him in the patients, pu.
pils, and all my associates.
For love of Him I am gentle,
kind, and selfsacr if icing to-
wards all. My bank account tn
heaven Is increasing daily, too.
How privileged I am to be
chosen by God to draw souls
to Him. The very thought
makes my heart beat foster!
We are always most happy
When we are resigned to God’s
Will, If His appointment for
me be a modern school, a well
equipped hospital or a comfor-
table schedule I would be hap-
py. If I should suffer a lack of
many things and find my sur-
roundings uncomfortable I
would rejoice and thank God
SUNDAY, MAY 8, 1900
for permitting me to live in-
circumstances so much like
His own, when he lived here
on earth,
I will pray to God, anil to
my patron saint, Saint There-
sa, for help to be a Sister and
then hand-in-liand with Blessed
Mother I will try to act always
so that Christ will he proud of
me. Having Christ proud of
me, how can I bo otherwise
than happy? - . '
