Gas Facts:
Energy Use
About 36 percent of the U.S. natural gas
delivered to consumers is used in the in-
dustrial sector—providing energy for ev-
erything from mining minerals to pro-
cessing food, according to the American
Gas Association.
Generating electricity accounts for
about 18 percent of gas consumption and
is a growing market for natural gas be-
cause of new high efficiency generating
equipment. Another 16 percent js used in
the commercial market to heat and cool'
buildings, hospitals and schools; and
cooking in restaurants the remaining
amount, about 30 percent, is used in the
residential market to provide energy for
heating, cooling, hot water, cooking and
clothes drying.
Gas Facts:
Cogeneration
Cogeneration is the use of a primary en-
ergy, like natural gas, to sequentially
produce heat and electricity. The concept
is based on the recovery and use of heat
produced but normally lost during the
generation of electricity. Cogeneration in
many applications can significantly re-
duce energy costs, according to the
American Gas Association.
Many commercial and industrial facil-
ities can take advantage of natural gas
cogeneration because of their require-
ments for large quantities of heat and
electricity.
