Whether or not the Chicago White
Sox are entitled to hold the pennant
as champion ball swatters and bat
shiners of the world will be contested
at Mineral Wells today and Sunday.
The 133rd Field Artillery are the con-
testers for the honors now packed
away in the old kit bag of the boys
from the windy city.
From all sources we have the as-
surance that the howitzer swabbers
will give the Chicago outfit a fit that
it never experienced during the cham-
pionship race last fall. They are go-
ing over with the determination to
bring home the grapes and if they fail
it will not be their fault, or because
they did not try.
Roy Self, the lad who pulled down
five- hits in the T. C. U. game last
Saturday and finally ended his career
by knocking a home run that brought
in three other men from bases, will
also try to slip some of his clever
stick dope on the boys from big time.
■ The standing of the artillerymen tor
date is a loss to the Submarines of
the Texas League and a triumph over
Texas Christian University in ten in-
nings to a finish to the tune of 12 to 7.
Captain Hooper has announced the
following as his probable line-up:
Ellzey, 3rd base, Arkansas Valley
League; Hooper, 2nd base, Central
Texas League; Dallafant, shortstop,
Trolley League; Self, 1st base, Middle
Texas League; Penn, left field, Middle
Texas League; Staaden, center field,
Dallas Semi-Professional; Towers,
right field, Western Association; Tay-
lor, Semi-Professional; Hfenderson,
Central Texas League; Dycus, Semi-
Professional; Pitchers Cooney and
Allen ,Semi-Professionals, catchers.
FOLEY WHITE, OLD
SCOUT AND PLAYER
Leaves Team to Go to Motor School
in North; Is Still in the Game.
The fact that Foley White departed
yesterday for Clintonville, Michigan,
to attend the United States Army
School for the study of automobile en-
gines, might help Uncle Sam whip the
Germans, but it will not help the base-
ball club of this regiment beat the
world's champions in Mineral Wells
today.
And Foley White’s leaving not only
robs the team of ^he spirit which has
guided it heretofore, but it takes a
picturesque figure from the regiment’s
athletic roster.
Though no one has been able to
discover just how old Foley White is,
he at least has lived long enough to
have played in every baseball league
of any importance in the South. Dur-
ing his career behind the bat Foley
has caught the stars and coached the
youngsters in the Southern League,
Texas League, Western Association,
and Texas-Oklahoma League, and on
numerous independent teams besides.
But much as Foley White knows
about baseball, and much as he' has
taught others about the game, he him-
self learned a new phase of baseball
when the first touch of this summer’s
sun brought out the gloves and bats.
Foley learned, or perhaps more prop-
erly, remembered what he had known
when he used to go barefooted—that
playing baseball is fun.
And so the game that had been his
business became now his pleasure, and
the Foley White who had for years
faced a diamond as a day’s work, now
went out to the lot behind the white
church for his fun.
So it was that when he was ordered
north—he not only hated to leave his
regiment, he hated to leave his base-
ball, he hated to leave his team. And
when he was asked whether or not he
ever expected to play again, he re-
plied with a smile that fairly lighted
his sun-browned face:
“Well, they all say that I am too
old now, but when I get out there I
will still make some of them sit-up. If
this war don’t last too long, I’m
liable to make some kid hustle for his
job yet.”
IF I SHOULD FALL.
By Robert Lee Harris.
If I should be among the ones who
fall,
Out there, a martyr to democracy,
I would not have a single eye grow
wet,
Nor one glad heart grow sad because
of me;
For God sent down His Only Son to
die
For this cause, “Peace on Earth Good
Will toward Men,”
And now He wills to send an honored
few,
To die for that same sacred cause
again.
MOTHER ENGLAND WE ARE COMING.
By Oliver Allstorm
Mother England, we are coming,
See the waters foam!
Long we’ve been disunited,
Now we’re coming home!
Hear the bugles sounding, mother,
Hear the rolling drum!
Look upon the stormy billows,
See the children come!
Mother England, we are coming,
See our sabers shine!
Soon Old Glory will be flying
On your battle line!
Soon our cannon wilj be roaring
’Neath your skies so blue
We are coming, Mother England,
Coming back to you!
Mother England, we are coming,
Yea, a million strong!
Sons of Sires whose Sires were English-
Sing an English song!
We are sons that share your glory,
Sons that share your pride,
We would die like English martyrs
Have for England died!
Mother England, we are coming
With our Starry Guide!
Hold the trenches, hold them, mother,
Till Our Day abide!
Then for love that we have cherished
And for blood that’s true;
Mother England we shall battle
To the end for you!
Mother England, we are coming,
Offsprings of your might!
One in tongue and creed and purpose,
Striving for the right!
We shall stand beside you, mother,
Till the German hordes
Look to God and cry for mercy
From the Lord of lords.
