POOL THERAPY...
The therapeutic use of water movements and exercises were popularized
by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and since then, Physical Therapists haue
increasingly begun to work in the water to deuelop individualized therapy
programs for their patients.
Howard Yap, P.T., Clinical Director of Omni Physical Therapy, states that
he feels very fortunate because he is able to provide his knowledge of Aqua
Physics to his patients. States Howard, "Water is one of the safest
environments in which an individual can move. Because of the relative
weightlessness that occurs when one is in the water, an encellent low to no
impact activity is offered. The water adds a cushioning effect to lessen I
stress and strain on the joints and re-
sistance that allows controlled move-
ments. This makes the water environ-
ment the choice for those millions of
people who are acutely injured or are
suffering from such chronic diseases
as arthritis. Other Pool candidates „
would include post-arthroscopic knee '
patients, and post-surgical should pa- ^ Jp
tients. Perhaps the greatest gains can „ ;'X
be made with back patients, either pre _ W*t#r dltptee#*

or post-surgical."
Adds Howard, "here at Omni Physi-
cal Therapy, one of our main objec-
tives, initially, Is to relieve our pa-
tients of their pain as quickly as possi-
ble. Pool therapy is a vital modality in
that treatment protocol. I also utilize
pool therapy in the total treatment
plan, when appropriate, to assist a pa-
tient with improving posture, breath-
ing, stabilization, balance, endurance,
strength and conditioning."

Water decreases j oint compression and
reaction forces, thus eliminating pain.
Water supports the body part, thus
eliminating the need for splinting/
guarding, thus the pain spasm cycle is
broken.
In water, there is a decreased percep-
tion of body weight.
Pool allows for convenient positioning
making the patient comfortable thus
eliminating the need for splinting.
Pool bombards patient's nervous sys-
tem with sensory input which travels
on fibers larger and faster conducting
than the pain. Perception is often
"gated" out. (i.e. blocked)
Pool is a distracting medium, it's fun
and thus takes patient's mind off his
pain.
