Day by Day By Betty Bazar
You have to understand that h
there is anything in life that 1 can hon-
estly say 1 bate it is a snake They scare
me and 1 know they will probably bla-
me. or someone 1 know and love i f vye get
too close, t he intensity of my feelings
about snakes is rivalled only by m\ total
dislike of fireants 1 don’t have any use
for either one of them.
Now. if the shake runs from me
arid doesn’t hang around and orlei to Be
belligerent. 1 don’t pursue them. 1 figure that il we can just leave
each other alone, that will be okay with me It’s those snakes the
just lurk around, waiting for you to cornt u<o close, ihat real!
make me mad. And "mad ’ is the right word choice because 1 go
just about nuts.
Growing up in southeast Texas. I learned earl s to alw ay
be on the watch tor snakes So. from early spring through
fall. I walk outside with one eye always on the ground
ever, about this time each s ear. 1 begin to relax ms vigil
mistake and ms little Cocker. Maggie almost-paid tor it
see. she doesn't even know what a snake is, she almost got;
scan introduction to one the other day
1 was outside walking her. it was about noon of the day
before Thanksgiving. 1 was off svprk and had just finnked
battling the crowds at the grocers stores. We vverejust son o>
lolls-gagging, around. Maggie was sniffing and exploring mu
1 ssas enjoying the unseasonable w'armth ol the noonday sun
Then. I casually glanced up and noticed a long pine branch ir
front of me.
• Not an unusual sight, pine trees are always dropping
small branches. Then. 1 realized something wasn’t right aoou
this branch: it was a big snake A snake that was about ihice oi
four feet long, and Maggie was about tsvo feet away from, him
I froze in place, unable to believe what 1 was seeing I k lay
there, not moving even so much as a muscle T he only thine ma<
told you he was alive was the way he held his head aloft iiist
inches above the dry grass
I snatched Maggie up and ran into the house, near! in
a state of panic and yet knowing 1 had to get • id of that snake
After getting Maggie off the leash. I tore out the back door
grabbed my snake-killing hoe. and ran around to the front \ ai d
Sure enough, he lay there in The same spot: that made me
even madder. He was still waiting for a victim. ! slipped up
behind him and swung my hoe I got him right behind the head
and he didn't want to die easily. He coiled up to protect his head,
that made me angrier. 1 went a little nuts: I'm glad none of ihe
neighbors were home. I swung the hot again and again and !
told him as 1 swung. "You sorry rascal you were going to bite
my little dog. T ake that and that!"
Finally, he was dead and 1 was breathless and shaking
from fear. You see. I was killing something that absolutely
terrifies me. But. I was proud because 1 had saved the world
from a four-foot poisonous snake. I even saved it for my dad to
see: 1 Felt brave. 1 had overcome my fear of the snake and killed
it and made the world a little safer for mankind Then, my dad
came home, and 1 showed him my kill.
"It's a chicken snake." he said.
"Oh." I said. "Gee. and I had felt so brave." 1 thought to
myself. Somehow killing a chicken snake doesn't quite com-
pare when you think you've killed a moccasin. Unless, of
course, that snake might have mistaken Maggie for-kwch.
