Numbers, please!
Okay, guys. It’s
time to get serious
here. Most of you
know that I’m on the
Deport Volunteer Fire
Department. That
means I know first
hand what I’m about
to talk about. Most
of you know that
these communities are
served by volunteer
departments.
Because of the small
size of towns served
by volunteer units, it’s
very easy for members
to be able to know
“our” people, wheth-
er they are patients or
need help with a fire.
BUT, and this is a
big one.....the same
people are not always
able to respond to a
call. And sometimes
those responding do
NOT know exactly
where they are going
just because a name is
given.
Which brings me to
the point.
Please folks, have a
911 number on your
house, in your yard or
on a mail box. Please.
In the past week we
have had a number of
calls where the house
wasn’t marked at all.
One woman actual-
ly said “Oh, we don’t
need that, everybody
knows us”.
And everyone
didn’t. We didn’t, we
had to go from house
to house, knocking on
doors to find where
the emergency was!
Another call was
given to dispatch in
Paris as “on the street
where the fire station
is”.
That’s a long street.
A deputy and three
fire department vehi-
cles had to go door to
door asking if there
was an emergency. To
cap that off, the emer-
gency wasn’t even on
that street!
I cannot stress how
important it can be to
have a number clearly
visible.
Seconds can count,
and the seconds until
help arrives can seem
long enough already.
While lighted num-
bers are very, very
nice, any number is a
blessing.
First Responders
know their people...
most of the time.
But please, don’t
be one of those peo-
ple who need help and
have no house num-
ber!
Failing that, there
are other things that
can be done. A car
with flashers on, a note
to dispatch that there
will be a certain kind
of make and model of
a vehicle in the front
yard, a mention that
the house has a green
roof....even a porch
light on can make it so
much easier.
All of these things
can shave seconds,
even minutes off of an
arrival time.
All First Respond-
ers want is to help.
They are devoted to it.
Help them help you.
Mark your hous-
es. Because honest-
ly, none of us knows
when an emergency
may arise.

The annual special Veterans
Edition of the papers will be
in November. We want your
stories! It's as simple as that.
We want the memories of
veterans from all wars, during
peacetime, their families who
stayed at home waiting, and
from those who served in the
armed forces even if they never
left home soil or if they were
not part of a combat unit.
We want stories from Viet
Nam,Desert Storm,peacetime,
Korea, World War II, the war
with Iraq or Afghani stan or any-
time in between We welcome
good quality photographs, they
should be jpegs if e mailed, or
on good paper.
Thunder Prairie Publishing
would like to share the mem-
ories of veterans everywhere
with those who want to hear
those stories.
Many veterans think that 'no
one cares oris interested". They
are wrong. The stories printed
in our veterans edition get used
as school teaching tools, as
reminders of sacrifices made,
and as reading material for
thousands.
It is one of the most looked
for and important editions of
our publishing year, and we
need YOUR help in making
it better. Anyone wishing to
take out an ad sponsoring this
special edition may do so for
only $20. Contact us at 903-
652-4205 or 903-632-5322.
There is no charge to send in
a memory or story.
Please send your memories
of the service, or of what it was
like with someone you love in
