About Our Teachers
Most years at gradua-
tion I write a column
about growing up, about
graduating, about the fu-
ture.
This year, I want to
address people who have
a huge amount to do with
graduates....their teach-
ers.
With all the tragedies
that have been occurring,
I have been struck by the
fact that school teachers
may be some of the most
dedicated and fero-
ciously courageous
people on this planet.
At Sandy Hook, how
many of those teachers
hid their students and
then defended them with
their lives...literally.
They died trying to save
those children, and they
succeeded in saving
many. What would that
death toll have been
without those brave
teachers?
Again, in Moore,
Oklahoma, what did
those teachers do?
They sheltered, they
calmed, they supported
and they shielded their
students with a selfless-
ness that is amazing.
They prayed, they en-
couraged.
Many of the elemen-
tary school teachers were
young women, one was
even carrying her own
child. They acted out of
what? Instinct? To a cer-
tain extent, since instinct
does play a part in our
desire to protect our
young. But I think that
mostly they acted out of
love.
I’ve watched teachers
for so many years.
I’ve known them to
grieve when a student
goes down a wrong path
in spite of their best ef-
forts. They will never
know how many stu-
dents did NOT go the
wrong direction in life
because of their efforts,
though.
Teachers who are my
friends pray for their stu-
dents regularly, before
the all-important tests,
when they know a stu-
dent has lost a loved one,
is going through a fam-
ily division, when they
know their student is
hurting.
Teaching can be a
thankless job. Its hard to
find ways to reach diffi-
cult students and make
sure that the really out-
standing ones get the
right amount of encour-
agement and help they
need.
Parents love their chil-
dren (of course) with a
fierceness that defies all
things. And sometimes
that splashes up on a
teacher.
Everyone makes mis-
takes, teachers included,
but the teachers I know
are devoted, loving, car-
ing and very involved in
their students’ lives and
education.
This past week, a lo-
cal fourth grade student
died in a tragic car acci-
dent. And I think one
teacher’s Facebook post
emphasized what I have
just tried to say. It sim-
ply reads “My heart
hurts”.
Teachers can be so
amazing. They deserve
thanks. Give it to them,
please.

Sale on June 7 and 8 in the
Tabernacle in Detroit. The
tabernacle is located just off
highway 82 and right across

All lions are encouraged

suitable items and reserve
them for this worthy under-
taking. Clean out those stor-

treasure to others. We will
take it all and find a new
home. Bring it on!!!

garage sale coincides with
the larger, but surely not as
important, 82-Garage Sale.
All monies acquired during
this sale will go towards
finishing the library. Thank
you for your support.
Phone Scams
continuing, use caution
Once again this newspa-
per has received a call about
a phone scam, this one also
is targeting the elderly.
A caller called an elderly
woman and asked "do you
know who this is". The
woman, in her 80's, replied
that she thought it was
"Brad", (her grandson) He
assured her that it was, and
proceeded to tell her he was
stranded in Haiti, had been
mugged and needed money.
Fortunately, this lady did
not fall for the call, and her
daughter later managed to
check out the phone number
on-line.
From that number numer-
ous calls have been made
that purported to be from
Microsoft, were trying
"clarify" something about a
bank account and asking for
personal bank account in-
formation, and the stranded
grandchild call.
Everyone is urged to be
very, very careful about
these calls. Do not give out
personal information or send
money !
Martin Memorial, Detroit, and Woodland United Methodist Churches welcome
new pastor Rev. Carl Sterling of Roxton, Tx. Pictured L-R: Paulette Sterling,
Rev. Carl Sterling, and UMC East District Supervisor, Dr. Joan La Barr.
