The Gazettes Austin correspondent Is mis-
taken In conjecturing ob = cnrlty for ex
Governor Ireland In event of his defeat for the
senate bach men are too n > uch n < cded In this
critical juncture of pub Ic affairs to allow them
to remain long In retirement governor Ire-
land will be wante at the front somewhere
along the line rBofque Citizen
The way for Governor Ireland ever to
be wanted at the front again is to
promptly get out of the way of the peo-
ple in this senatorial race The ballots
show that the people dont want him in
the rear where he has uniformly stood
defeating their evident preference for
Keagan or Maxey
The first ballots cast at Austin showed
that neither Ireland nor Terrell was the
choice of the people and Terrell with
drew Not so did Ireland He is not the
desire of the people but as all his honors
have been won by management he holds
on thwarting the popular desire that
some man who has not dared to ask the
people for the office of United States Sen-
ator may be elected Each day that John
Ireland obstructs the will of the people
digs deeper that political grave into
wnich he is descending Cold and sel-
fish ho will go to his political doom un-
wept and unsung save by the few he
bound to himself with favors while in
office
The Richmond Va State is a long
way from the scene of action but it has a-
very correct idea of the latest bloody
shirt scheme The State says Three
while scalawags residing in Washington
county Tex recently resurrected the
old trick practiced so often in the south-
ern states during reconstruction days of
petitioning the United States Senate to
protect them from bulldozing and blood-
thirsty Democrats The hanging of three
murderers is the excuse for the presenta-
tion of the petition which was submitted
through Senator Howley of Connecticut
whois a very willing soul in matters
where the south or its people can possibly
be damaged in property or injured in
character
The papers are discussing the grow-
ing indisposition to matrimony The
reasons given for this prevalence of
celibacy is that so much luxury so much
of the grand ballet that the world calls
society is discouraging to the average
young man This will do well enough
for an excuse but suggests an ex-
change why do not the old bachelors who
are pining for girls of the opposite stamp
look in the stores and shops for them
Most of this class of girls have been
drilled enough in the school of economy
and brought up with sufficient dearth of
amusement and society to suit the most
fastidious old bachelor Perhaps it Is
just as well looking at the matter philo-
sophically that these delicate society
buds should not get husbands Most of
them are the last feeble and flickering
relic of of a moribund stock often of a
stock reduced by the sordid pursuit of
illgotten wealth almost to the very verge
of inanity if not eyen of insanity
SUL BOSS FOB SENATOB
Viewed from a purely political stand-
point the suggestion of Governor Ross
name as a darkhorse solution ol the
senatorial deadlock is rather farfetched
since Senator Coke resides at Waco
But the reasons arising from this fact
aside there are other considerations
which induce The Gazette to believe
that the suggestion is without
force General Ross aspired to
be Governor of Texas and the
people of the state responaed
to his aspirations in a manner that must
have been grateful to his pride and to his
ambition Governor Ross is an honor-
able and an honest man he asked to be
governor and was made governor and
The Gazette does not believe that he
would accept the United States senater
ship if the position were tendered him on
a silver platter
Governor Ross is a much shrewder pol
itian than he has received credit for being
but he is not a politician of the kind that
would ask f oroccept and discard a trust in
order to secure one for which he had not
asked He wanted to be governor and
he is governor and as governor the mans
honesty of purpose firmness and prepa-
ration for the duties of the office which
he sought justify him ia feeling that he
will leave it with a consciousness of
duty thoroughly performed and a self
satisfaction which he could not reason-
ably hope to enjoy after a sixyears term
in the Senate The Gazette does not
say or Intend to say that General Ross
is fit to be Governor but unfit to be Sen-
ator but The Gazette does say
that he is better fitted to be Gov-
ernor than Senator and that he is
just the man to bravely put aside any
temptation which would lead him into
disregard of what he esteemed an obliga

AS A LIVE STOCK MABKET
Fort Worth is now a horse market of
the first class As detailed in our local
columns yesterday a company of capital-
ists has been for some time quietly but
steadily perfecting arrangements for this
end Extensive stock yards on the South
Side ha7e been leased sidetracks from
the various railroads and a large number
of stock cars which will be remodeled
preparatory to early use It is the com
panys intention to maintain the largest
yards of the kind in the southwest and
to supply buyers from every section of
the country They propose to keep sad-
dle horses work horses brood mares
mules and jicks and to handle them on a
big scale They will import largely from
the sister republic and will run cars regu-
larly between this city and El Paso As
an tarnest of what the company intends
doing it maybe mentioned that they have
just concluded a deal with Senor Adalfo
Bundles a wealthy banker of Durango
Mexico whereby a herd of 200 0 Mexi-
can horses of good grade were purchased
for spot cash and will be landed in Fort
Worth about the first of next month
This movement will go lar towards mak-
ing ot the city the great live stock maiket
of the southwest The refrigerator is
now the properly of a strong company
and once in operation will complete the
work of putting Fort Worth beyond all
competition as the live stock market of
the country south of St Louis
HAS AND ELEl TBICITY
As electricity slowly crowds out gas as
an illuminant we wonder that efforts
have not been made to use the latter as a
fuel and power producer When gas is
burned In an ordinary gas flame 05 per-
cent is consumed in producing heat and
the remaining 5 per cent only in produc-
ing light We learn this from an excel-
lent authority and also from the same
source ttiat gas is far more efficient than
raw coal as a heating agent and it is
also far cheaper to turn coal Into gas and
use gas in a gas engine than to burn the
coal directly under the boiler of a steam
engine Bearing these facts in mind it
would seem that the day is not far dis-
tant when both by rich and poor gas will
be used as the cheapest most cleanly and
convenient means for heating and cook-
ing and raw coal need not enter our
houses Also that gas engines must sooner
or later supersede steam engines and thus
gas be used for driving the machine
that produces electricity With the sub-
stitution of gas for coal as a fuel will
end the present abominable and wasteful
production of smoke There will bu no
more carting about of coal and ashes
and no more trouble of using wood and
paper to kindle the fire No more coal
scuttles no more sooty chimneys If it
is as we have stated in the beginning of
this article it will pay gas companies to
look into the matter We do not say
that the electric light is an entire success
yet for we believe that gas can be sup-
plied cheaper given the same amount of
light But the present lack of improve-
ment in electric lighting we believe to be
due almost solely to speculation The
matter has been taken from the hands of
men of science and put in the hands of
stock joabers But we trust that all at-
tempts Ime not been cast off to give
regular and efficient suppiy at a reason-
able cost
WAVIXG THE BLOODY S1IIBT
Stnator Coke did himelf credit in his
opposition the other day to the Senate
resolution proposing an inquiry by the
Senate committee on privileges and elec-
tions into recent alleged political cut
rages committed by Democrats in Wash-
ington county Tex These socalled
outrages as The Gazettes readers are
aware wete the outgrowth of the elec-
tion troubles in Washington county Sen-
ators Hoar and Edmunds as was to be
expected waved the bloody shirt in the
course of th debate and depicted ku
kluxism as revived and rampant in Texas
Mr Coke defended his state from the
charges and opposed the inquiry on the
ground that if there is anything to in-
vestigate any crimes to punish any
gnevarces to right the state of Texas
has jurisdiction and is competent to do
all that is needful in the premises and
Mr Coke was right His constitu-
ents will SRy amen to every word he
uttered The Senator like the rest of us
does not dread the results of an inquiry
as he Is confident his statements are true
and will be vindicated He is in favor of
a thorough and impartial investigation
by the state authorities but resents fed
eral interference which he properly
characterizes as not warranted by the
facts in the case and as an Insult to the
state of Texas Tnere is a principle in-
volved in the matter the rights and dig-
nity of the state and it was f r this
principle that Coke made his sturdy fight
But the Senate is Republican and of
course the resolution passed It is qnite
probable the committee Having charge of
the subject will open an elaborate in-
quiry and as it has power to send for
persons and papers no doubt there will
be a great deal of talk and partisan gush
before the matter is ended The Ga-
zette can only hope that as the majority
is determined to have an inquisition the
committee will do the work thoroughy and
as impartially as practicable II that is done
The Gazette feels assured the result
will as complete vindication as Senator
Coke and the Democrats of Texas can de-
sire for it will be shown as the repre-
sentative reputable people in Washing-
ton county claim that the Washington
county troubles were not brought on by
Democrats and that there was not the
faintest semblance of kuklnxism bulldoz

ing or organized intimidation In the sub-
sequent happenings The lynching of
the three negroes in Washington county
might have occurred under similar cir-
cumstances in Vermont Massachusetts
or Rhode Island in which case the Re-
publican Senators who were so profound-
ly impressed with what they had heard
from Texas would not have been im-
pressed at all If the inquiry is searching
and fair the committee will find that per-
secution because of a mans political be-
lief is as rare and as unpopular in Texas
as in any other state of the Union the
bailiwicks of Senators HoarandEdmunds
not excepted

Estimating the chances of the three
candidates by the ballots from the outset
no other opinion can be formed than that
if Reagan gave way Maxey would be
elected and if Maxey gave way Reagan
would be elected and that there is no
hope for Ireland in any event Certainly
the two leading candidates can feel under
no obligation to give way for one who
has lingered uniformly so far in the rear
The Twentieth Legislature was sup-
posed to be peculiarly representative of
the people in arms against the
methods of politicians but the ballots
show that a reform hayseed legislature
can be as easily manipulated at the public
expense as can any other class of men
Among the supporters of Governor
Ireland are the names of gen-
tlemen who were sent to Aus-
tin on a popular movement that
professed to be only for the public good
for reform measures and economical
methods yet they deliberately waste
time voting for a man who has no chance
of success and thus enable him to pre-
vent an election at a cost of so much a
day to tne tax payers These gentlemen
will no doubt be able to explain satis-
factorily to their constituents but those
who are not professional or spasmodic
reformers and who view with dis-
trust the periodical howl that goes up
against politicians observe with no
surprise the attitude of certain Hayseed
PeoplesPartyAntiMoncpolists at Aus-
tin They are as pliableasany old wheel
horse A few letters from the people at
home to their representatives at Austin
might prove a potent key to the deadlock
The people evidently want Reagan or
Maxey and both these candidates have
ample justification for lighting the Oat
tie to a finish Reagan can point to the
ballots already taken and to the record
which pave him strength Maxey is jus-
tified in accepting Irelands aid in the
effort to wear Reagan out for Maxey will
win If Reagan falls by the wayside and
has stood close to the great commoner as
the choice of tue people But what ex-
cuse has Ireland for obstructing the
popular desire and for delaying legisla-
tion
The Gazette sees no reason to change
its comment on the first ballot viz If
Ireland yields gracefully it will be
Reagan or Maxey if Ireland is stubborn
it will be Reagan or a dark horse
Ireland is stubborn and it nowrests with
Mr Reagan to say whether he can hold
on to fight the battle to a finish Can he
as the embodiment of an idea
which Maxey has not antagonized
hold his supporters as those of Maxey
and Ireland are held If he can it will
be Reagan If he cannot he will see it
and may be expected to be either th3
Senator or a potential influence in nam-
ing the man who is
CAPITAL PUXISIIMENT
The most cruel utterly heartless sug-
gestion made in late years in connection
with a system of capital punishment for
criminals came from a party of scientific
mm in New York a few days ago A
large number of men eminent in the field
of chemistiy and uicdicine were assem-
bled to discuss that old topic a substi-
tute for hanging This is a theme that
comes up every now and then and it
always evokes earnest discussion lor
there are a great many people who are
opposed to hanging as a mode of legal
execution Numbers of people are op-
posed to capital punishment in any form
but even among those who do not object
to a death penalty there is a very respect-
able element that d precates the rope and
scaffold Their objections are based on
various grounds sentimental moral
etc Of course the discussion took a wide
range There were the usual sugges-
tions of the guillotine an electric
shock and death by inhalation of
certain gases One wing however
capped the climax by proposing virisec
tion This would remand the poor devil
sentenced to death to the doctors and
medicalvstudents who would put him on
a dissecting table and calmly and scien-
tifically carve him up alive as is now done
with dogs rabbits and other dumb
brutes The advocates of this policy ar-
gued eloquently what art advantage it
would prove what a field of research it
would open up to medical and surgical
science They admitted it would be ter-
rible on the subject but pointed out that
the benefits to accrue to humanity would
more than counterbalance the occasional
torture of a felon To the credit of the
V
il
assemblage It may be statetf the Jplv
isectionlsts were voted down as thgy de-
served and the meeting broke jop with
the general understanding tiist for the
present at least hanging will do If any
innovation is to be made and it will bs
long time ere the present mode i8dis
pensed with society will list that tbjJ
substitute shall be as freeafrjom pain
as possible with the elenj2nb
of cruelty absolutely eliminated
The theory of the law and we may of hu-
manity is that the infliction of physical
pain on the criminal is in no sense a con-
sideration in the infliction of cap-
ital punishment The chief end of
the penalty is to deter others
from committing like crimes as
well as to remove a man whose presence
is a menace to his fellowmen Any tend-
ency to m3ke the form of the penalty
more severe as to physical suffering
ought to and will be rebuked
