A SUICIDE
There was one incident of the accident
which stood out more horrible than all of
these horrible scenes In the second
coach was a man his wife and little
child His name could not be
learned but it is said he got
in at Peoria When the accident occurred
the entire family of three was caught and
held down by the broken wood work
l nally when relief came the man turned
to the friendly aid and feebly said Save
my wife first I am afraid the child is
dead So they carried out the mother
and as the broken seat was taken
off of her crushed oreast the blood which
welled from her hips showed that she
was hurt lie carried the child a fair
haired blue eyed girl of three and laid
here in the cornfield dead along side of
her motaer Tne other went back for t ae
father and brought him out Both
his legs were broken but he
crawled in the corn to the side of his
wife and folding her loved form to bim
in the darkness pressed some brandy to
her lips and asked her how she felt A
groan was the only answer The next
instant she died The man felt
the forms of hia dead wife
and child and cried out My
God there is nothing more for me to live
for and taking a pistol out of his pocket
he pulled the trigger The bullet went
through hi3 brain and the dead bodies of
that little family are lying side by side
waiting to be identified

TO SUCCEED JUSTICE WOODS
Washington Aug 11 If Michael L
Woods of Alabama is to be be-
lieved President Cleveland has virt-
ually decided upon the appoint-
ment of a successor to exJustice
Woods of the United States Supreme
court Tne fortunate man according to
Mr Woods is Judge Edward W Pettu3
of Alabama In the course of sn inter
view Mr Woods says I know that the
President sent for Judge Pettus and
it was to consult him about
the appointment Senator Georce was
prominently mentioned at one time but
Secretary Lamar appeared on the scene
and Georce dropped out of sight but
Lamar will not be appointed You can
say without fear of contradiction that the
President considers Lamar his chief coun
seller and on that account he will not
give him up I am of the cpcion that
Judge Pettus will receive the appont
ment and he is a man who will be a
credit to the state and wil prove once
more President Clevelands irood judg-
ment ia the miner f i > eietiocs fur re-
