BAD BREAK
OneotWncaj Ootton Compvesres a Com-
plete Wreck
Special to the Gazette
Waco Tex Oct 4 About 11 oclock
this morning an accident that may be
termed a disaster occurred at the Brazos
compress situated eqnidi3tant between
the Cotton Belt and Missouri Pacific de-
pots It is a disaster in that it will in all
probability stop work at the compress
for the remainder of the season cause a
los of many thousands of dollars to the
stockholders and throw employes out of
work On these accounts it
is a matter that excites the in-
terest of the whole community At
the hour above mentioned the press was
at work flittening cotton working at a
pressure of 750 pounds 1500 pounds being
the maximum pressure The machinery
and everything about the pr ss was in
flrstclaes condition Suddenly and with-
out warning a ponderous portion of the
pressing machinery known as the platton
broke with a terrible crash Two col-
ored employes who were the nearest to
the scene were bruised and lacerated one
very severely and it is fortunate that the
latter escaped with his life This platton
above mentioned is part of the compress-
ing apparatus that weighs 35 tons or
70000 pounds These castings and
machinery are produced at but two works
in the United States Mr W D Lacy
superintendent of the Brayis Compress
states that he ha3 no theory to offer in
explanation of the accident The pres-
sure that was on was only half of the
limit Everything was so far as he
knew in firstclass condition end he was
astounded when the disaster occurred It
was simply and purely a break and a
bad break He s ys that the press-
ing apparatus is a complete wreck
and he doubts if it will be p sible
to replace the broken narts before
the end cf the cotton season The direc
loss to the stockholders will be STOO or
88000 while resultant losses are difficult
to figure but certainly not less than SIV
000 or 15000 for the compress season
has just opened and the Brazos compress
wouid have flattened its full share of cot-
ton brought to Waco for compressing
Tne press is one of the most complete
works of the kind in Texas It was built
about seven years ago at heavy cost
and has always done a large business
Lst season it handled about 40000 bcles
of cotton and had flattened about 7000
bales this season up to today About
2500 bales of cotton were on hand when
the accident occurred today Mr Lacy
said in view of the occurrence a meeting
of the directors would be cilled at an
early date and a decision would then Jte
reached as to what steps and
how early will be taken m the
way of repairs Tnere is anothir
and a firstclass compress in Waco the
one in the Fifth ward owned by Joseph
Nalle Co Msjor J F Herbert super-
intendent of this press states that it will
be aole to tske care of all the cotton like-
ly to come to Waco this season ao there
need be no apprehension that cotton will
be necessitated to seek other points for
prompt compressing

A CONSUL ON COTTON
Special to the Gazette
Washington Oct 4 Consul Uiwe
writing m the State Department from gfcAJ A RE
Rtchenbenr Austrian Bohemis refers at
some lengtn to a subject of great lntertst
rn the exporters of ra v cottvin fn m the
Unittd States Mr Hawes says that by
fir the greatest importation from the
United Spates into his consular district Is
cotton the exact amount will probably
asgregate 23000 bales annually About
60 per cent of all the raw cotton used
there is American the rest comes from
India The India cotton although in-
ferior to thu from America is preferred
simply because of the superior manner
in which It is packed The bales by
reason of this fact occupy only hilf the
space of those from America although
containing about an tquai number of
pounds The loose packing of the Amer-
ican product causes the bales to burst
open aod as a consequence more or less
of the staple is losL Consul Hawes in
conclusion says K the American bales
were compressed to nearly haif their pres-
ent size and more stroDgly packed 1 am
sure it would affect favorably the sales of
American cotton here and elsewhere
American cotton growers can not afford
to neglect any means of this kind if they
would compete with their India rivals
