Tlie Prospects of Cattle Movements
During the Present Year
President Brush or the Colorado Association
on tho ihuatlon Palace Car Bates
Notes and Personals
Major Sam Hunt the gentlemanly and
accommodating general livestock agent
of the M K T road is baok in the
city from a trip to South Texas and was
yesterday rounded up by a Gazette re-
porter in hopes of getting some points on
the cattle outlook
Everything said Major Hunt
points to a lively livestock business
this year and there will be between
now and May 1 a heavy movement of
Btock cattle to the Indian Territory
These cattle will in a great measure
come from the Texas and Paoiflo territo-
ry west of Fort Worth and from
Southern Texas and will be destined to
different points in the nations of the flvo
civilized trlboB
1 believe continued Maj Hunt
that notwithstanding tho reports of
cattle shortage tho snipment of beef
cattle to tho different markets this year
will be fully as heavy as they were last
yearWhere
Where will the cattle come from
ore they in tho country asked the
reporter
Dont bother yourself about that
there are plenty of cattle I dont think
there will be so many inferior cattle
ehipped this year as there was last year
but as I said I think there will be fully
as many
Besides the cattle movement there
are going to bo heavy shipments of sheep
mutton sheep to market Shearing
will beein about April 1 and tho pros-
pects for a heavy clip are very good
Good mutton is now scarce all over the
country and the demand fonit is very
strong a fact that indicates that the
prosperity of the sheepman last year is
to he continued this year
THE CONV NTION AND CATTLE
Xlvcstocli Agent Llewellyn Talks on Live-
stock Blatters
Maj W H H Llewellyn livestock
agent for tho Santa Fe route spent last
night and this morning in the city en
route south He is just in return from
Fort Worth where he accompanied thir
tyfive delegates from New Maxico to the
cattlemens convention and according
to all reports did the handsome thing by
them Major Llewellyn regards tho
meetinc just closed as one of the most
successful ever held Several thousand
delegates were present from all parts of
tho range oountry and a general un-
derstanding in behalf of united action
was had that will bring about good re-
sults One especially good feature was
an agreement to foster and encouraso
beef refrigerating enterprises Already
three such plants aro in operation in
Texas and others will bo established
A great many stookmen from tho North
and Northwest made extensive contracts
lor New Mexico cattle during the meet-
ing and the prices were all that could
La reasonably expected Of the New
Mexico stock Industry generally Major
Llewellyn speaks most hopefully He
says 30000 head of beef steers have
teen sold in Southern New Mexico and
Northern Arizona in the past twenty
davs The prices run from fi to 10 for
yearlings J9 to 515 for twos and 815 to
So for threes the price depending
upon the location of the cattle
relative to shipping point crade etc
These sales are made to feeders in Kan-
sas Nebraska and Missouri A great
quantity of feed is still on hand in those
states and farmers there are taking this
method of converting it into a market-
able commodity Montana and Wyoming
parties are also heavy buyers In New
Mexico at this time A steady demand
is Ukelv to oome from the pasture owners
of Missouri Kansas and Nebraska this
year because the state and national
quarantine regulations will prevent those
pastures from tilling up with Texas cat-
tle This will work a great benefit to New
Mexico breeding farms The Santa Fe
read counts on a heavy cattle traffio to
those states throughout the spring and
summer and it proposes putting on trains
composed of the Hioks patent palace
cars New Mexican
CATTXT3 IiOKE
President Brash of tho Cattle Growers As-
sociation of Colorado Talks Cattle
to a Reporter
Hon J L Brush president of the
Colorado cattle growers association
passed through Fort Worth yesterday on
his return from San Antonio and South-
west Texas ranges and in a talk to a
Ga7ette reporter said
My partner and I shipped from San
Antonio thirteen cars of beef cattle to
Chicago as fine beef as I ever saw
shipped off grass in any country Wher-
ever I have been cattlo interests look
well feed is good and has been through
the winter The future outlook is good
Tnces are stiffening and I look for better
times among cattlemen
I have made arrangements to ship
about 7000 head of feeders over tho great
Panhandle route to Colorado and Wyo
nilng I am much pleased with the
opening of this masrnifieent cattle route
which promises immense benefits to Colo-
rado Wyoming and Texas The stock-
yards are well built the attendance Is
good and all shippers are treated as they
deserve
Mr Brush is summoned to Colorado by
wrcent telegrams but expects to return
in a fortnight He regrets that he was
unable to be present at the conference in
Columbus and Victoria In regard to re
r gerators On the whole he is well
pleased with the cattle convention at
3Tcrt Worth andanticipates excellent re-
sults both to cattlemen and consumers
Shipped from Richardson
Special to the Gazette
Ricuaudsox TexMarch 21 There
were fourteen cars of cattle and one car
cf hogs shipped from here yesterday to
St Louis This is the second shipment
this month aud there are about ten or
twelve more carloads still in the vicinity
The farmers are learning that It pays
them better to feed their corn to cattle
scd hogs than to sell it at twentyfive or
thirty cents per bushel
Palace Car Rates
There seems to be a misunderstanding
among cattlemen as to the rates on
palace or stable ears the idea prsvallina
that thsre I no extra chftrse on cattle
shipped in them to any point This is a
mistake and it should be understood by
all On oattle shipped from Texas to
any point outside of the state the rate on
oattle shipped in stable cars the rate is
just the same as on ordinary cars except
in case the stable car is of greater
capacity then an additional per cent is
charged In case however of cattle
ehipped from one point in Texas to an-
other point m the same state an addi-
tional 10 per cent is charged on all cat-
tle shipped In atable cars It is under-
stood however that this will bo taken
off in a shore time and all shipments no
matter whether in or out of the state
whether in stable or ordinary cars will be
on the same footing
It vrns Not the Banquet
The cattlemens convention atFort Worth had
wonderful possibilities within its reach The
best brain of thegreat industry was there the
time was ripe for an earnest discussion and a quick
solution of the Ills that have dogged the foot-
steps of the cowman for so many years but the
opportunity was lost and nothing but a few bare
resolutionswas the result Too much banquet
too little business Combinations of buyers will
always triumph so long as the producers puts
an enemy in their mouths to steal away their
brains at the critical moment San Angelo
Standard
It was not the banquet that prevented
much important business from being
transacted The convention adjourned
sine die before the banquet was indulged
in The work of schemers was done be-
fore the banquet came off
Shipped from Eartlett
Special to the Gazette
Bartlett Tex March 24 Kimber
Hn Brothers shipped today twelve cars
of one and twoyearold yearlings to
Quanah
Notes and Personal
Mutton sheep are remarkably scarce in
this market and command fine prices
The hog is gaining ground in Texas
and with a paoking house he will take an
advanced position
Cattle shipments from New Mexico this
spring promise to be heavy both of
stockers and beef classes
Stock shipments from Corpus Christ
are increasing and prices for good cattle
are reported to be advancing
The cattlemeu are anxiously waiting
for the report of the committee appointed
to examine the refrigerators at Victofia
Columbus and Fort Worth
They Pleaded Not Guilty
New York March 24 The batoh of
deputy sheriffs and exWarden Keating
of the Ludlow street jail indicted by
the grand jury for malfeasance in office
were in the court of general sessions to-
day Each entered a plea of not guilty
ratal Boiler Explosion

ing John Dennis Frank Parker mill

Clay Houser the Denton county man

cratic postmaster ousted has succeeded
in getting the appointment One hun-
dred and live citizens of tho neighbor-
hood both Republicans and Democrats
signed a petition to Mr Clarkson asking
that there be no change made in the
office here It seems that when there is
a slice of official pap in sight however
small and a Republican wants it no at-
tention is paid to wishes of the commu-
nity
Wheat is beginning to come out and
the prospects are very good at present

Where Women Come From
Womans first appearance has been a
fruitful subject for the legendmongers
The Phoenician myth of creation is found
in the story of Pygmalion and Galatea
There the first woman was carved by the
first man out of Ivory and then endowed
with life by Aphrodite The Greek
theory of the creation of woman aocord
ing to Hesiod was that Zeus a3 a cruel
3est ordered Yulcan to make woman out
of clayand then induced the various gods
and goddesses to invest the olay doll with
all their worst qualities the result being
a lovely thing with a wichery of mien
refined craft eager passion love of
dress treacherous manners and shame-
less mind The Scandinavians say that
as Odin Till aud Ye three sons of Bor
were walking along the seabeach they
found two sticks of wood one of ash and
one of elm Sitting down the gods
shaped rrian and woman out of
these sticks whittling the woman
from the elm and calling her Etnia
One of the strangest of stories touch-
ing the origin of women is told by the
Madagascarenes In so far as the orea
tion of man goes the legend ia not un-
like that related by Moses only that the
fall came before Eve arrived After the
man had eaten the forbidden fruit he
became afflicted with a boil on the leg
out of which when it burst came a
beautiful girl The mans first thought
was to throw her to the pigs but he was
commanded by a voice from heaven to
let her play among the diggings until she
was of marriageable age then to make
her his wife He did so called her
Baboura and she became the mother of
all races of men The American Indian
myths relative to Adam and Eve are
numerous and entertaining Some tra-
ditions trace back our first parents to
white and red maize another is that
roan searching a wife was given the
dausthter of the king of muskrats who
being dipped into the waters of a neigh-
boring lake became a woman
When Baby was rick we gare her Castoria
ffhea she was a Coild she cried for Castoria
When she became Hiss she clung to Castoria
Wfcea she had Gnldren she gsT8 them Castoria
