LOUISA’S LETTERS
Dear Louisa:
I am a girl fifteen years old
find I am treated like a child. I
may not date or even run around
With my friends. I may not even
go for a walk on Sunday with
my girl friends. All I do is sit
around while other girls are hav-
ing a nice time.
My parents are rather old-
fashioned and they think I
should wait until I am eighteen
years old. I think I am old
enough to know right from
wrong.
Please tell me what to do.
' • Lonesome
Answer:
I think your parents are mak-
irig a mistake in being quite so
strict with you, Lonesome, but
try to have patience, for we both
know they are acting that way
because they are trying to pro-
tect you from things that they
fear may hurt you.
I can certainly see no objection
to your taking a walk on Sunday
With girl friends unless the girls
have bad reputations or walk in
places where they should not.
I think also that for a group of
girls and boys to get together at
one of your homes or in the
church parlors or at the canteen
is very wholesome recreation for
all of you.
Try to make your parents un-
derstand that it is only normal
for girls and boys to enjoy each
other’s company. This doesn’t
mean riding around over the
country at night, staying out
late or going with grown men—
all of which I think is dangerous
for a girl of fifteen.
But surely you are old enough
to enjoy group parties or early
movies with boys and girls of
your own age.

You have solved many prob-
lems for many people and I hope
you can help me with mine.
When dating girls, which is
the correct side to let a girl in
and out of a car?
It seems odd to let her out of
her side when she slides right
over next to me any how. It
seems to me it would be simpler
to just get out of the car and let
her slide through on my side.
When calling on a girl, should
the girl come out to the car or
should the boy walk into the
house and escort her out? Also
should he escort her back to the
house when returning?
If you answer this letter you
will not only be helping me but
many other young fellows,
SUSPENSE—PA.

always call for a girl at the door
of her home and will help her

jOROBABLY the first thing
* you do when you reach
home on a warm summer
evening is to peel off the belt
that’s been clinging to you
all day.
I Warm weather is just ahead.
And the warmest part of it is the
sticky feeling from a wide belt,
one that gathers fabric at the
waistline and looks chic but feels
[hot.
j * There’s a brand-new solution
for this old problem. One manu-
facturer has brought out a straw
[belt (looks just like an ordinary
jbelt) that gives you your own
private air-conditioning. It uses
no chemicals and there’s no
■water-drip, the maker claims.
& In ordinary summer weather,
you wear it as you would any
'; other belt. But when it turns
really warm, trickle water over
dhe right side of the belt. The
; color-fast straw absorbs the
water^ and the aluminum belt
[lining cools the belt and keeps
jit' cool until the straw dries out
[again. This takes several hours,

[simply dampen the belt again. (

Dear Louisa:
I am a girl and very despon-
dent. I don’t seem to have any
enjoyment in life.
What could I do?
Lonely and Despondent—Penn.
Answer:
Most of us have to make an ef-
fort to have fun and happiness in
our lives and one of the best
ways in which we accomplish
this is by becoming interested
in other people and other pro-
jects.
Take an active interest in
your church work, in any civic
project in your community. Help
into the car on her side of the ( with younger people. In this way,
you get to know and like many
adults that you would probably
never be thrown with. Be inter-
ested in music or in any other
organizational activity. More
happiness comes by doing for
others than by any other way.
But do think about yourself in
this way. Make the most of your
looks. Fix your hair attractively.
Keep your skin, finger nails and
clothes in good condition. If you
know you are well groomed, it
will give you enough confidence
in yourself so that you can think
of other things.
You may need vitamins, but
if your health is good, there is
no reason for you to be lonely
or despondent.
Louisa.
Dear Louisa:
I am fourteen years old and
my mother lets me have dates

Don’t you think she is treating
me badly?
BETTY—VT.
Answer:
No, I agree with your mother
that you are much safer with
boys of your own age. When old-
er boys start going with girls a
great deal younger than them-
selves, they are usually up to no
good and a girl as young as you
are has not had enough experi-
ence to know how to keep an
older man in his place.
Your mother is wise to insist
that you double-date and come
in early.
So often girls of your age go
out with older men and let them
get too familiar. If the girls
could hear how they talk among
themselves about the girls that
cheapen themselves, they would
die of embarrassment.
boys, be nice and friendly and
charming but don’t let them get
the idea that an automobile ride
entitles them to a petting party.
The boy will think more of you
if you keep him in his place and
you will certainly have more self-
respect.

Dear Louisa:
My child is anxious for a pet
and we can’t decide whether to
get him a dog or cat.
Which do you think makes the
best pet?
MOTHER—DEL.
Answer:
A child usually enjoys a dog
more than a cat but dogs are
more trouble to take care of than
cats. Dogs get run over by au-
tomobiles or have worms, etc.
A cat keeps herself clean and is
easier to feed. If you have a
fenced in yard, a dog is much less
trouble than if you live in an
apartment. *
