THE WASHINGTON POST
By John Carmody
Washington Post Staff Writer
- television legend Norman Lear yester-
day agreed to sell the eight TV stations
controlled by his ACT III Broadcasting
for more than $500 million...
According to Reuter, the Boston-based buyout
firm of ABRY Broadcast Partners II will buy
Lear's firm in a deal scheduled to close in the
fourth quarter, subject to approval by the Federal
'Cmmunications Commission ...
Lear, 72, owns just under 60 percent of ACT
ill Broadcasting through his ACT III Communi-
cations, of which he is the sole stockholder. The
balance of ACT III Broadcasting is held by
institutional investors, employees and directors.
According to a spokesman, Lear and the inves-
tors are selling the stations to take a profit and so
that he can focus on other unspecified projects.
Lear is also the founder and a principal under-
writer of People for the American Way, the
liberal lobbying group ...
The stations, all Fox affiliates, are WZTV,
Nashville; WUTV, Buffalo; WRGT, Dayton, Ohio;
WRLH, Richmond; WVAH, Charleston-Hunting-
ton, W.Va.; WNRW, Greensboro, N.C.; WUHF,
Rochester, N.Y.; and WTAT, Charleston,
All but the Nashville station are also affiliates
the United Paramount Network. WNRW is
switching its primary affiliation to ABC in Sep-
teraber ...
]ear was the producer of three incredible hit
ries for CBS that helped keep that network on
top for years. His breakthrough "All in the
Family" in 1971 led to such spinoffs as "Maude"
in 1972 and "The Jeffersons" three years lat-
But his recent sitcom projects have not proved
popular with audiences ...
Two recent flops-"704 Hauser" and "Sunday
'vner"-were on CBS. The third, "The Powers
That Be," hung around for a while on NBC, and
dz introduce David Hyde Pierce, who has since
become a major star on the network's hit "Fra-

Former Channel 7 news anchor Susan King
yesterday received a check for more than
$100,000 in severance pay, plus interest, from
'e station, exactly one year after an arbitrator
dtided in her favor in a case that attracted
mention around the country ...
King, now executive director of the Commis-
in on Family and Medical Leave, said yesterday
at she's "very pleased that it's finally resolved"
Mt that the apparently deliberate delay in pay-
.ent "was very annoying"...
She said the check "finally closes that chap-

because she had left voluntarily...
Contending the WJLA offer amounted to a
"constructive discharge," as it is known in legal
rms, she agreed to become a test case for the
i cal chapter of the American Federation of
Television and Radio Artists ...
In his ruling, Thomas J. DiLauro, a professor
at Temple University, said that "the management
4f WJLA should have known that a television
journalist of the grievant's caliber and experience
would not have accepted an offer to be demoteda full-time reporter position with a greater

CNBC has signed criminal defense attorney"Past the Bleachers" on WJLA.
"Prime Suspect 2" on "Mystery!" on WETA.
And the Red Sox vs. Orioles on WFTY.
SportsGerry Spence to host a Friday prime-time half-
hour on the law. The show will debut on July
7...
"Gerry Spence" joins the CNBC 8 p.m. week-
night block that features programs bearing only
the host's name. "Tim Russert," for instance, is
seen on Monday and Tuesday evenings, "Cal
Thomas" on Wednesday and Thursdays. "Gerry
Spence" will occupy a time slot that for the past
six weeks has been occupied by former NBC
morning anchor "Mike Schneider." For the long-
est time, the Friday slot belonged to "Poz-
ner/Donahue," but, besides not getting their full
names in the show title, Vladimir and Phil were
asked to take a pay cut and they ankled CNBC
(look, it is a very slow, very warm Wednesday
afternoon and one should be grateful for this
CNBC background material on the longest day of
the year. Well, maybe not grateful, exactly) ...
Spence will broadcast live each Friday from
either his home town of Jackson Hole, Wyo., or
from CNBC's studio in Burbank, Calif. The show
will examine "our judicial system based on the
lessons of the OJ. Simpson trial and other legal
issues that are important to Americans".. ..
Moving Right Along
NBC's "Today" show goes south for two
days early next week, with the cast spread all
over Florida on Monday and broadcasting from
the Great Smoky Mountains in eastern Tennes-
see on Tuesday before heading back to their
street-level studio in New York, which just cele-
brated its first anniversary ...
On Monday Bryant Gumbel will be at Univer-
sal Studios, Katie Couric will be at Disney World,
news anchor Matt Lauer will be at Cape Canaver-
al, and Al Roker will be at Busch Gardens, in
Tampa ...
The two weekend news shows debuting in
mid-August on Channel 7 will get considerable
input from the WJLA investigative unit, accord-
ing to news director Gary Wordlaw. And they
won't be just old weekday I-Team leftovers,
either, he promises ...
With only anchor Lori Stokes named so far,
Wordlaw says to expect major staff announcements
by the first of next week as the station gears up for
an additional four hours of local news on Saturdays
and Sundays, debuting Aug. 19 ...
"60 Minutes" correspondent Lesley Stahl and
actress Kathy Bates are among the five women
who will be honored tomorrow night at the 1995
Women of Vision Awards Gala sponsored by Wom-
en in Film and Video of Washington ...
Other honorees are Elizabeth Campbell, who
receives a Lifetime Achievement Award as a
founder of WETA; Judith Dawn Hallet, an inde-
pendent producer and director, for creative ex-
cellence; and Ruth Roland, co-owner of the TV
and film production firm of Roland House Inc., for
leadership ...
Stahl will receive the award for excellence in
journalism; Academy Award winner (for her role
in "Misery") Bates, for excellence in film ...
WUSA anchor Andrea Roane will be mistress
of ceremonies, and CNN anchor Judy Woodruff is
honorary chairman of the event at the ANA
Hotel, starting at 6:30 with a reception and silent
auction. Dinner's at 8. For more information and
tickets, call the WIFV Hotline at 202-232-2254.
That's 202-232-2254.. .
CNN producer Jody Hassett's car broke
down yesterday morning on her way to the
Washington Monument, where Tipper Gore, Ann
Brown, chairman of the Consumer Product Safe-
ty Commission, and John Hetterick, chairman of
Rollerblock Inc., were to hold a news conference
on how to prevent skating injuries ...
Fortunately and appropriately, Hassett had her
Rollerblades in the trunk and skated to the
assignment. Gore noticed. "She grabbed me and
scolded me for not wearing the proper equip-
ment, but then she got me a helmet and kneepads
and elbow pads and wrist guards and was very
nice," said Hassett ...
A lot of kids were on hand for the safety
demonstration, Hassett said, and Gore showed
them how to do a good stop. The Second Lady
told everybody that her husband, the vice presi-
dent, had given her her first pair of Rollerblades
for her 40th birthday and, considering the poten-
tial for injury, joked that "a divorce would be
cheaper right now" .. .
Gore said she hasn't skated in the White
House but had taken a turn around the halls of
the Senate ...
Starting at 9 a.m. today, C-SPAN2 will havelive coverage of the second cloture vote in the
Senate on the nomination of Henry Foster to be
surgeon general ...
A half-hour plug for Disney's "Pocahontas"
on ABC Tuesday night didn't help much, but
the network won the evening, as usual. ABC
averaged a 9.7 national Nielsen rating and an 18
percent audience share; "Disney's Pocahontas
... The Musical Tradition Continues" contribut-
ed an 8.3/16...
NBC was second with an 8.4/15 for the night,
while a rerun of "Batman" on CBS produced an
8.1/15. "Drop Dead Fred" did a 5.5/10 on
Fox...
Locally, "Pocahontas" did a 9.4/16 on WJLA,
"Batman" a 10.2/18 on WUSA, and "Fred" a
6.0/11 on WTTG. "Legend" on WDCA contribut-
ed a 1.3/3. Each national ratings point represents
954,000 TV homes; a local point, 18,760 TV
homes ...Waterston in the lead role. Two hours (Chan-
