'Very little was saved in the way
of personal belongings and the loss-

frigerator, washing machine and
other Items of that sort. The Toss
was partially covered with insurance.
, Mr.' Dunham, employe of the Tex-
as Company, told Chief of. Police
Ted Miller that he arrived home
shortly before' 4 o'clock after night
work on a lease northeast of town.
He had lighted a gas heater and left
it on' when he went to bed. He
awoke in blinding smoke and found
the blaze had already gained much
headway. In the building at the
time .were Mr. and Mrs. Dunham,
their soninlaw and daughter, Mr. |
and Mrs. T. W. Davidson and
daughter, Nancy Jane; another
daughter, Mrs. Virginia Hixon and
her children, Mike, Richard and
Gayle. ,
All escaped without injury but lost
nearly all of their clothing.
Nancy Jane Davidson and Gayle
Hixon are only two years old.
Neighbors cared for the women and
children while the men worked
frantically to save a few pieces of
furniture. Although the city fire
truck was rushed to the scene and
the pumper hooked up immediately
the volunteer firemen were hamper-
ed in getting to the scene because of
not being able to start their cars.
Many walked upward of ten blocks
through the snow.
Citizens quickly rallied to the aid
of the stricken family during the
day. A cash offering and other help
enabled them to get established by
nightfall in a house owned by Mr.

will be temporariyl located until
their home can be rebuilt or another

All superlative adjectives hafl
been used up by Friday and all prev-

struck this area in other days were
broken during the past week in
which ' thermometers went below
zero " and snow simply stayed and!
wouldn’t melt.
It' all began Saturday night, De-
cember 28 with a blue norther ac-
companied by .02 inch drizzle which
fell early Sunday morning. Ther-
mometers registered 65 above zero,
Saturday at noon and had dropped
to 25 above zero by 9:30 p. m. On
Sunday morning, December 30, at 4
o’clock the thermometer at the Tex-
as Company Gasoline plant register-
ed 16 above zero. The highest read-
ing that day was 25 above zero.
Monday morning, December 31, the
i Electra area was blanketed with
one inch of snow which fell between
midnight and 6 a. m. and a low off
16 above zero was registered. Hk
snow melted very little, during the
day and was augmented with a light
drizzle of sleet, although the sun
shone bright at times during the
afternoon. The New Year, 1947, was
ushered in with six inches of snow.
There was but little wind
and any breeze that may have
caused the flakes to drift was from
the southwest. By daylight Dec. 31*
the snow was 6 inches deep, on level
places and drifts reached as high as
12 inches. The city and precinct
road graders were used to clear the
principal streets downtown and the
highways but approximately one
inch of snow and sleet that night
hardened the snow already on the
ground, making it impossible to
carry on 'the work of snow removaL
All except necessary travel was cur-
