GIVE ’EM WHAT THEY WANT
ENGINEERS of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation
lJ last week wired Mayor Tolliver asking for more details'
on the city’s application for a loan to finance a
water system.
Mayor Tolliver, quite rightly, is going to see that they
iret plenty of the data that they require. It appears to us,
however, that the city is overlooking a bet in not employ-
er a competent engineer to prepare the application^and
see it through.
Through the medium of the West Texas Chartib£r of
Commerce, engineers of wide reputation may be secured
with compensation to be paid when and if the loan is
granted. In our opinion, the city would save lots of tirriej
and, in the long run, probably some expense by turning Lost 40 Pounds
their application over to an engineer who would be immed-
iately recognized by the Advisory engineers to the R.F.C.
at Washington.

DAVIS MOUNTAINS REFORESTATION CAMP
IklSPATCHES in the daily press and letters from Rep. R
U E. Thomason all say that reforestation camps are tenta-
tively planned for the Davis mountain region. It seems to
ss that the Davis mountain country would be an ideal lo-
cation for these work camps. That area is so raw and un-
developed. yet so rich and so capable of ultimate exploita-
tion that it is a shame that neither state nor federal gov-
ernment has paid much attention to it heretofore.
Texas, having no natural forests, is yet due her share
of the reforestation work. The Davis mountain region has
sufficient rainfall to maintain pine, spruce, cedar, oak and
many other beautiful trees If you doubt this, take time
some weekend to climb to the summits of some of the
ridges and there you will find as beautiful pine trees as
anywhere in this western country.
Let us hope that the Texas Relief Commission and the
national agencies which are superintending placement of!
the forestation camps will act quickly. Highways, plant-
ing of trees, drainage work. etc. . . fertile field for all of
these activities are to be found in the mountain regions.

npHE public has grown weary of the old slogans to the ef-j
I feet that “Prices are booming! Buy now!" etc. But
there’s truth in those phrases at present. .
, Recent inflation activities and the prospective change
in the gold hacking of the dollar, will be the most power
ful price stimulant in three years. It really is time to buy
nowr.
Best of all, by buying now, and building and repairing !
now, you can do your bit in the most dramatic stage of the
war against unemployment and distress and at the same, -
time secure the greatest return on your dollar in more than *
a generation.
A dollar in property improvement means a dollar
touching the lives of a thousand people—ami doing a
thousand dollars’ work. Repair the steps, paint the house,
remove fire hazards, renovate the garden, renew rotting
foundations with concrete—do any of these things, and
you’ll be a factor in the work of recovery
It is not prophecy to say that in your lifetime you’ll
never have the opportunity to get work done as cheaply
as now. It’s fact. The price structure is abnormally low.
It is lower than even the intenseness of depression justifies.
As demand increases, the rate of climb will be sharply ac-
celerated.
Remember that providing jobs is cheaper than char-
ity—and that it’s better to provide a i«»b now than to have
to contribute to charity next year. Remember, too, that
unless the jobs are provided it won’t be long until nothing
is left for charity!
