CITIZENS:
There has been quite a lot of controversy about theCounty Superintendent s office in Red RiverCounty Many have
talked about whether il should or should not lie
When Texas became a state, she kept her school lands This wealth is known as State Available School Fund Just
the dividends and interest from this fund can he spent The County School Superintendent s salary. his secretary's
salary, the County Board's per diem, the eounty census, and the county superintendent's office expenses, ineluding
telephone, are paid from the proceeds of this fund IN RED RIVER COUNTY. THE OFFICE OF THE
SUPERINTENDENT COSTS OUR COUNTY FROM THE AVAILABLE SCHOOL FUND APPROXIMATELY $4 ini
PER YEAR This amount can be verified by the Texas Education Agencv. Division of Finance. Austin. Texas TO
HOLD AN ELECTION TO ABOLISH THIS OFFICE WOULD COST THE COUNTY TAX PAYERS
APPROXIMATELY 92.600 We think we should have a County School Superintendent Let us tell you some of the
things he does:
The County Superintendent is responsible for keeping the school census
He is responsible for the bus transportation of the county.
He is the disbursement officer for the county available fund
The County Superintendent is the school records officer.
The County Superintendent is the liason officer and ref#ral officer of the County educationally
Since three schools in our county, namely. Talco-Bogata. Avery and Detroit, are too small for each to have a
supervisor and visiting teacher and-or other special personnel, under a Cooperative Agreement through the
County Superintendent's office, these schools share one supervisor and one visiting teacher, both of whom
contribute to the welfare of our county
In Red River County, the County Superintendent distributes Surplus Commodities to the various schools for the
school lunch program.
There are additional duties or responsibilities of the County School Superintendent that we will not list due to the
length of the explanation.
In 26 of our 50 stales, the County Superintendent is the superintendent of all schools in the eounty. and this is
essentially what the Governor's Committee* on Education has recoin mended for Texas One superintendent for one
county, except for congested areas We believe that in school business as in many other businesses, and especially in
other government agencies, we are top heavy. We have tint many Chiefs and not enough Indians, hul they are not all
in the County Superintendent's Office
If this article is right accept it, if it is not in principle, please correct it We do not want to live in error, nor do we
present it just to win an argument, hut to help derive the truth for all of us
Let us not hoodwink the ignorant, buy the corrupt, nor pressure the weak I-el us seek the truth "The truth will
make us free!”
