WASP and envies those who flew the P-51. We're all fine
and very busy with huge garden and trying to keep 170
acres from going back to nature, with no animals
foraging. Weekends our home is haven for family and
.nds, with barbecue, range, washer and drier working
ru 1 tilt. Very often the fly fishermen provide enough
trout for a dinner.
(The mailman just brought another envelope, this one from
dear Mary Trotman.)
MARY TROTMAN O'BRIEN Have just returned from two months
on Cape Cod with my sister, Kay. We went to New Hampshire
and Maine for parties with relatives. Had a wonderful
time! It's great to go but always nice to come home. Have
a million things to do, but I'll take time to answer your
card (the card concerned a forthcoming issue of the
Newsletter that will be devoted entirely to members who
are WASPs).
Sorry I didn't see more of you in San Diego. We were so
spread out it was hard to see anyone.
Don't know whether I told you or not: Kay and I flew to
Hongkong, spent four days there, had a ball, then on to
the Royal Viking Star to Singapore, stopping at Manila,
Bangkok, Thailand, and other stops. Then on a second
cruise, same ship, to Sydney, with five stops in
Australia. We were in Perth while the boat races were on.
was a great cruise -- loved every minute of it. Spent
ee days in Sydney, then flew to Los Angeles for a day,
and on home.
Definitely I'm going to Boston in May for P-47 meeting,
1988. It's my home town. I'll be interested in where
we'll be staying. Hope they are planning a good program.
There are so many things to do there.
See LIZ LUNDY once in a while. Talk to TERESA JAMES every
so often, and that's about it as far as the WASP are
concerned. Thanks for your card. Stay well and healthy --
and happy. My best always, Mary. P.S. Change my zip code
from 33458 to 33469.
MARTHA WAGENSEIL RUPLEY This time CAPPY BRIDGE was the
darling girl who wrote as soon as she read the News-
letter, bless her. (Think how nice it would be for all of
us if everyone did that!) Then came another response,
this from RUTHIE REYNOLDS. So now we are three. A lovely
cool summer in Southern California this year, with an
unheard-of .01" of rain in August but no earthquakes,
tornadoes, or hurricanes, though the humidity has been
higher than I ever remember, and morning vitamins melt in
the container.Talked to JARY MCKAY not too long ago. She has been
working very hard on her instrument rating, and now all
that hard work is behind her. She seems to travel all the
time, though I know she works hard at her editorial
business between trips.
I've been trying to convince FAA that someone who has had
bypass sugery should not only fly again but that those of
us who've been through that and recovered are really much
less likely to have a heart attack than most pilots now
flying. FAA thinks otherwise, but I think I stand a good
chance - I've been corresponnding with Dr. Audie Davis of
FAA in Oklahoma City, and now that he's aware of who I
am, I am just about ready to mail the final test results
and cardiac evaluations. Then the wait for the verdict.
Wish me luck. Erik (son) started flying lessons here in
Fallbrook several months ago, driving down every week for
two lessons and to play tennis with us here. Now he has
soloed, made his first night flight, and was weathered
out of his first cross country by our very low morning
overcasts.
Last week I began the 18 hours of learning the Laubach
method of teaching literacy. I've wanted to do this for
several years, but the classes are three hours twice a
week, and I was never able to match my schedule to
theirs. Now there's a class right here in Fallbrook, 10
miles away, so I changed my schedule. We have lots of
illiterates, mainly Mexican-born ranch workers (but also
native Californians), some of whom are illiterate even in
their own language. I'll be working only with adults. I
think the teaching will be absorbing, even rewarding..
A very sad day in my life recently. I had three children,
two in California and one in Wisconsin. Now I have the
two in California. Erik, the magician - comedian, came to
spend a few days before leaving on the NCL Sunward for a
three-week Bahamas cruise of shows in the Caribbean, and
Kim, the working graduate student, will be here shortly
for an extra-long Labor Day weekend.
I should have explained that the reason Erik drives down
here to fly is that lessons here cost only half as much
as they do at Clover Field in Santa Monica, where he
lives - $43/hr here.
FRANNY GUSTAFSON called last night. She and I had been
planning a November get-together somewhere about halfway
between us, probably Fresno, and including MARGARET
GERHARDT and GERRY MICHELSON. Fran and Gerry were in San
Diego a couple of months ago for a Ninety-Nine meeting. I
met their flight and we spent a lovely day together,
"touring" San Diego, including the very modern CoronadoS
