“9/11, a day that changed this nation forever. RIP to all the fallen heroes. Gone but never forgotten. ”

September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance
The September 11th Na-
tional Day of Service and
Remembrance is the culmi-
nation of efforts originally
launched in 2002 by the 9/11
nonprofit MyGoodDeed
with wide support by the
9/11 community and leading
national service organi-
zations. This effort first
established the inspiring
tradition of engaging in
charitable service on 9/11
as an annual and forward-
looking tribute to the
9/11 victims, survivors,
and those who rose up in
service in response to the
attacks.
In 2009, Congress des-
ignated September 11th as
a National Day of Service
and Remembrance under
bipartisan federal law, and
charged the Corporation
for National and Commu-
nity Service with helping
to support this effort across
the country. For the anni-
versary, CNCS is working
with MyGoodDeed and
numerous other organiza-
tions to implement one of
the largest days of charita-
ble service in U.S. history.
Paying Tribute
On the anniversary of
the September 11th at-
tacks, Americans will unite
in service in the same re-
markable way that so many
came together following
the attacks.
As in years past, we
anticipate service and re-
membrance activities in
all 50 states, at which there
will be opportunities for
hundreds of thousands of
volunteers to paint and
refurbish homes, run food
drives, spruce up schools,
reclaim neighborhoods,
and support and honor
veterans, soldiers, mili-
tary families, and first
responders. To find op-
portunities to serve dur-
ing this year’s September
11 th Day of Service and
Remembrance, you can
look for projects using the
"Find volunteer opportuni-
ties" tool. Or, to organize
a service project in your
area, find toolkits and other
resources here.
Many people were
moved to act in the days
following the attacks of
2001 and long after. CNCS
gathered stories of people
whose lives and paths were
changed by 9/11, and who
have dedicated themselves
to service as a result.
Locally, the Shelby
County Memorial Veter-
ans of Foreign Wars Post
8904 and the Ladies Aux-
iliary invite the citizens
of Shelby County to join
them at their annual Patriot
Day Observance, Thursday
September 11th, 2014 at
the Veterans Memorial
located on the grounds of
the Historic Shelby County
Courthouse. The program
will begin at 9:30 am and
include a prayer, Pledge of
Allegiance, lowering of the
colors to half-staff, remarks
by Center Fire Chief Keith
Byndom, Shelby County
Sheriff Willis Blackwell,
Center Chief of Police Jim
Albers and Jessie Griffith
of ACE EMS, memorial
wreath laying, bagpipes
by Joaquin Mayor Mike
Wood. The program will
be closed out at 9:46 a.m.
with the playing of Taps.
If you cannot join them,
we urge all citizens to take
a moment to remember the
over 3000 innocent people
who lost their lives on Sep-
tember 11, 2001. Sacrifice
is meaningless without
remembrance. America’s
collective consciousness
demands that all citizens
recall and be aware of the
deaths of their fellow coun-
trymen.
George Hancock to recall
career in Private Investigation
and Law Enforcement at
XAGHS September Meeting
City of Timpson approves bid
for Market Street improvements
Timpson native and
1964 Mr. THS George
Hancock will speak on his
distinguished and success-
ful career in law enforce-
ment and private investi-
gation at the September
meeting of the Timpson
Area Genealogical and
Heritage Society. A gradu-
ate of Lamar University
with a degree in Criminal
Justice and a Viet Nam
veteran Marine, Hancock
began his law enforcement
career with the Nacog-
doches County Sheriffs
Department in the 1960’s
following his discharge
from the military. A former
Texas DPS officer and
holder of a special com-
mission from the Texas
Rangers, Hancock was
manager and corporate
investigator for Chevron
Corporation's Global Se-
curity Department for 21
years. He is currently the
CEO of George H. Han-
cock Inc. which specializes
in investigations in the oil
and gas and energy sectors.
The many client engage-
ments of George Hancock's
career include investigat-
ing high-value equipment
diversion and theft by an
organized criminal net-
work, resulting in multiple
felony convictions and
recoveries for victimized
petrochemical companies
as well as investigation
and identification of
responsible parties in
a series of proprietary
information leaks with
heavy losses from com-
promised trading posi-
tions for a refining and
marketing client.
He also has led au-
dit teams investigating
contractor and vendor
fraud and overcharge
cases for exploration
and production clients,
resulting in numerous
recoveries, and in addi-
tion, he has investigated
conflict of interest and
fraud involving multiple
employees and vendors
for an oilfield services
client, developing a case
for federal criminal pros-
ecution.
Having lived around
the country over his
lifetime, Hancock has
returned to East Texas,
making his home near
Pollock in Angelina
County.
The TAGHS meeting
will be held on Sept. 17 at
2 PM in the meeting room
of the Timpson Public
Library on the corner
of Austin and Bremond
Streets in Timpson. The
public is invited.
The Timpson City
Council met in special
session on Tuesday, Sep-
tember 2, 2014.
Mayor Debra Smith
introduced Mike Walker
from Goodwin-Lasiter to
discuss bids received for
the remainder of work to
be done on Marcus Street
with Hurricane Ike-Round
II funding. Mr. Walker
advised the Council that
the lowest bid was from
Angelina Excavating of
Lufkin in the amount of
$38,643. There is $40,250
left for the project. He said
this project overlays the
section of the street left out
in the middle and extends
the road to the edge of the
church’s property. The
Council approved the bid
from Angelina Excavating
contingent upon approval
of GLO.
The Fire Chief advised
the Council that the Vol-
unteer Fire Department
currently has two tanker
trucks, one of which is
uninsurable and cannot be
used. They have an offer
from Nix Forest Industries
of $2,500 to buy the truck.
The TVFD needs the City
to amend its 2014 budget
so that a used 1995 Ford
tank truck can be pur-
chased with VFD funds if
it is found to be in good
condition. This will give
the VFD more capacity
for fires, a total of 3,000
gallons of water. After
purchasing this 1,000 gal-
lon tank truck, the TVD
will still have enough in
the bank to match funds
should a grant become
available for a new pumper
truck. The Council ap-
proved: 1) the VFD buying
the truck for no more than
$25,000 if it is in good
operating condition; 2)
city funding for gas to go
inspect the truck and bring
it back to Timpson; and 3)
the sale of the old 1982
tank truck to Nix Forest
Industries for $2,500.
The Mayor advised the
Council that they would
not adopt the final budget
until the September 16
Meeting because a Public
Notice had to be published
in the local paper first. She
stated that the City would
not have to be a hearing
as the city is considered
to have a low tax levy.
Mayor Smith reviewed the
account balances and notes
payable. The Mayor and
Council discussed several
items in the budget, in-
cluding Police Department
expenses and revenue plus
eliminating the K-9 unit;
possible cost savings for
office supplies and cutting
advertising in the local
newspaper; the new water
rates effective in Novem-
ber; and proposed salary
increases and Christmas
bonuses. The Mayor sug-
gested that the Council take
the budget notebook home
and review it closely for
the September 16 meeting.
The Council approved
the Interlocal Agreement
to accept TMLIEBP Insur-
ance proposal, Continua-
tion of Coverage Agree-
ment, Benefit Acceptance
Form, and Ordinance
090214-1 effective Octo-
ber 1,2014.
Timpson denied funding for
rolloff trash cans
Although Timpson had been previously advised by DETCOG’s Solid Waste
Advisory Council that a grant had been approved to provide rolloff trash cans for
residents, the City has now been notified that they are not eligible for the grant.
Rusty Phillips of DETCOG advised that the Texas Commission on Environ-
mental Quality (TCEQ) notified them that the City of Timpson’s 2015 Solid Waste
Grant has been determined to be an ineligible project by TCEQ. The state denied
it for the following reason: “Funds may not be used for activities related to the col-
lection or disposal of municipal solid waste”.
