As Christmas Carols and songs
fill the air, most of us have heard
the "Twelve Days of Christmas".
This is an English song, back
when the twelve days of Christ-
mas meant a gift given each day
to a loved one.
Well, it's been something of a
joke around the office that we
^should do an East Texas version
Bf the song and start out with®
"On the first day of Christmas
my true love gave to me a possum
in a pear tree".
A friend pointed out that it
should be "A possum in a PE-
CAN tree", so that's how our ver-
sion will begin.
Here goes!
On the first day of Christmas
my true love gave to me a pos-
sum in a pecan tree.
On the second day of Christ-
mas my true love gave to me two
quail a' flying, and a possum in a
pecan tree.
On the third day of Christmas
my true love sent to me, three
armadillos, two quail a'flying
and a possum in a pecan tree.
Beginning to get the picture?
Here's the rest of the list, with-
out the recap back to the possum
each verse:
Four Skunks a spraying
Five Oil Wells gushing
Six Cowgirls dancing
Seven Cowboys Roping
Eight Pickup Trucks
Nine Country pickers
Ten boots a 'scootin
Eleven gallons of chili
Twelve Buzzards circling
and, of course, that possum in a
pecan tree!
It certainly isn't the first time
that the song has ever been
adapted to suit a particular locale,
but we enjoyed sitting around a
table and happily coming up with
ideas.
We discarded some such as 10
hunters hunting,four farmers
plowing, two tornadoes twisting,
and several others, not because
we felt them inappropriate but
because we simply didn't have
enough days to use them all on.
We briefly considered a
"RedneckTwelve Days of Christ-
mas" version that would feature
things such as” two worn out
washers", "six packs of beer" and
a few other tasteless things...but
decided that it wouldn't be appro-
priate.
■ We all had fun with the whole
^hing, though, andhope you will
get a holiday'smile out of our
version of an old classic too!

Manhunt Continues
For Armed Robber
The search for an armed robber in
the northwest part of Red River
County continues this week, follow-
ing an early morning gun point rob-
bery.
The manhunt began after the re-
port of a Paris attorney being robbed
at gun point at his home early Friday
morning at his home on FM 1502.
Reports reveal that the attorney
awoke in his bed to find a man wear-
ing a Halloween mask pointing a
shotgun at his head and demanding
all the money he had. The intruder
ransacked the house and stole a ve-
hicle from the residence. The vehicle
was found abandoned shortly there-
after with the engine still running on
a small dirt road off of FM 1502 near
the community of Midway.
The search was concentrated in
this area.
A Red River County Deputy was
tracking the suspect Friday morning
when the man shot at the deputy and
then ran into a thicket of trees. The
suspect has not been seen since.
Red River County Sheriff Bob
Edrington reports that law enforce-
ment agencies from Lamar, Red
River, Titus and Franklin counties
and DPS officers have been working
together in the manhunt.
Sheriff Edrington, and Lamar
County Sheriff B.J. McCoy have
had tracking dogs from McAllister,
Oklahoma brought in. They were
still tracking north of Bagwell Mon-
day afternoon. Rain andheavy woods
have hampered the hunt.
Sheriff Edrington reports that no
evidence has been found that can
positively identify the robber, but
(hey do think they know who he is.
He is thought to he responsible for a
long rash of crimes, including many
break ins in cabins and deer camps,
and is known as a "survivalist".
A joint effort between Lamar and
Red River County Sheriffs depart-
ments will continue until he is cap-
tured, officials stated.
DISCUSSION-Red River County Sheriff Bob Edrington (left) discussed strategy with Lamar
County Sheriff BJ. mcCoy (right, front) and Lamar County Investigator Joe Tuttle Monday
afternoon at the Red River County Command Post. Law enforcement officials have had a massive
manhunt in progress sine last Friday morning when a masked robber broke into the home of Ed
Ellis and stole a number of things, including a Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle was found
abandoned shortly after the robbery occurred, and the search has concentrated in north west Red
River County. (Staff Photo by Thomas Nichols) '

A Letter From
The
Editor
Dear Readers, \
When I came to work on Mon-
day morning, there was a message
on the answering machine (It took
the lady two phone calls to get all of
the message said.) The lady's name
is Cynthia Meenach and she lives
at The Colony. It seems that the
lady had an emergency with her
grandmother, Mary Jo Riley, over
the week end and desperately
needed help. She wants the people
of Bogata to know what kind people
we have in our town. She says that
without the help of Mr. A.D.
Stephenson, and Mr. James Wood
she would have had a catastrophe
on her hands, but due to the kind-
ness of these two Bogata folk, her
grandmother is resting comforta-
bly in Red River Healthcare Cen-
ter. Our town is hill of good Sa-
maritans, and we hear about good
deeds done by them all the time.
Mr. Stephenson's and Mr. Wood's
good deeds would never be known
if someone else didn't tell them, so
we'd like to add our "good work,
we appreciate you" to Ms. Meen-
ach.
