FRIDAY, MARCH 18th, 1874.
Tbe Modern Meeting Hons*.
Howdy, Davy, 'light nn’ hitch, thar’
no one home but me;
Thar ain’t a man a livin, sir, I’d
aooner like to nee;
For Nance an’ Liddy’s gono to seo u
sick man on the hill,
An’ Hiram’s gone to got In* grist at
Jason Turner’s mill.
I was in town last Sunday an my
heart an me agreed
To go to moctin—cf you'll wait I’ll
tell yon what I soed.
The bolls wor tollin’ lively on tho
balmy mornin air,
An’ folks wor in a hurry, liko tho
rushin to a fair.
The moetiri house was built ov stone,
the steeple pinted high,
Tho winders they wor painted nl1
tho colors of the sky;
An runnin up tho steeple was a
great long lighlnin rod—
1 kinder thought the members lackod
a confidence in God.
Tho big boll sorter hushed hitsolf
and thou hit rung some more,
An’ people cum in carridges an got
out at tho door ;
The wimmen fixed thnr dresses like
they meant to make a -call,
Thar faces showed thoy warn’t a
thinkin or thar souls at all.
Wall, Davy, thar 1 stood an thought
—Htfas wicked I suppose—
Rome go to church to close thar eyes,
and some to eye thar clothes;
I overheard ole Missers Swell to
Miaaors Stebbins say,
“My darter Becky's dress warntdun,
she wont bo hero to-day.”
I stood thar hesitatin’ liko whotsort
ov movo to make;
I felt-that I should go inside for my
salvation’s sake;
I started meekly in tho house, I
know it wnrn't no harm,
With my ole broad-brim fc*t in hand
an jeans coat on my arm.
X. went along 'bout half way up the
velvet carpot ile,
Tho men an women shet thar gates,
an’ they begin to smile;
I soed one open jest a bit; wont in
an’ pulled it to,
When Brown, the bankor, riz an’
said, “this ore’s a rented pow."
I got out ov his “ronted pew" an’
Sot down near the door,
Expectin’ for sum man ter say “this
era's a rented floor.”
A flno-drossed strangor—he oum in
—the membors.didn’t wait,
But overy feller jumped at him an’
openod wide his gate.
Tho parson riz an raised hiz bans
with cold and haughty air,
An everybody in the houso stood up
and heard his prayer.
I don’t know how it is with them
somehow 1 always feel
I’m doih God injustice when I got
too proud to kneel.
Then ail sot down an stared about,
then at the parson’s face,
W handle put on his specs an sed,
“loot’s sing ‘Amazin’ Graco.”
An orgin busted loose up stairs, the
music bit was gay,
It Hoklod them as couldn’t sing an
them wot hod to pay.
Tho music quit, tho parson riz, they
passed the bats roun next,
An when the deakens sot them doun
the parsun tuck his text.
He preached about two hours ’bout
the faith in God to keep;
The wimmen folks war noddin while
thar husbands war asleep.
One gal tod to anothor, “Uev you
seed my boau to-day?”
She nod her hod an then say back,
“The party hit was gay.”
One whispered loud enough behind
hat fan for me to hear,
“That bonnet Sofy Tag’s got on is
one sfib had last year.”
The ptreon quit and then sot down,
the orgin played ngm;
I thought of that was servin’ God,
tho tone* they played wor thin;
I’vo hearn tho bands at oi -cuscsjost
play the self-same air,
The parson, when the orgin quit,
dismissed ’em all with prayer.
Now. Davy, ef the angels soed what
1 did, I believe,
Thar warn’t a one, among ’em all
but what laffed in thar sloeve;
For God don’t smile on Chrletlaaa
who His blesain’s will abuse;
He ain’t no use for orglnn, an’ he
don’t like rented pews.
