Cowboys Fall 6-0
Before Jackets In
Brownwood Clash
Simmons Piles Up Margin of
First Downs And
Yards Gained
Locals Threaten Twice
Jackets Add Victory To Long
Chain Over Rival
Baptists
In n pa mo which was n culmination
of a traditional fucd between the two
clans tho Howard Payne Yellow
Jackets as of old rose to brilliant
football heights to defeat tho Sim-
mons Cowboys C-0 in Brownwood
November 25.
Out played out gained out rushed
but novcr out fought the Jackets
took advantage of the Cowboys' noted
weak pass defense to score a touch-
down on nn aerial heave Taylor to
Underwood late in the third period.
As n prelude to the game's only tally
Hucstis attempted to punt from his
own 20 yard line when ho was smoth-
ered by a charging Payno tackle
Sikcs. The kick was blocked nnd re-
covered by the Jackets on this same
20 yard stripe.
Two lino plays resulted in no gain
and on third down Hay Taylor step-
ped calmly back and tossed the oval
into tho waiting arroi of Underwood
who was standing across the goal
line.
Cowhands Threaten
The Cowhands threatened to score
at least twice and kept the enemy on
the run throughout the first half
stopping nil Howard Payno advances
dead in the meantime.
Near tho closo of the second quar-
ter Milby intercepted a Jacket pass
at mid-field and ran to the Howard
Payno 20 beforo being downed from
behind. On the first play from scrim-
mage following this sensational run
-by-a sub fullback McCollum on a re-
verse through tho center of tho line
carried the ball to thfc IB. Pee plung-
ed off right guard for 1 yard' as did
McCollum on the next play. With
fourth down and 3 Pee's attempted
field goal from placement wa3 block-
ed by a mass of Howard Payno for-
wards and the scoring spurt faded
into oblivion.
Taylor Fumbles
Later on in tho samo chukker Hues-
tis punted to Taylor standing on his
own 15. Tho Brownwood ace back
fumbled momentarily and Creighton
recovered for Simmons. Three lino
. plays netted 3 yards and on fourth
down Thompson's pass to Hucstis was
incomplete over the goal line.
To start hostilities Peo kicked-off
over tho goal line with tho ball being
put in play on tho Jacket 20. Tho
Brownwood Baptists were soon for-
ced to punt to the Simmons 26. It
looked liko a field day at this point
for the Ranchers who took tho ball
and plowed straight up tho field to
tho Jacket 27 beforo being stopped.
Throughout tho early stages of tho
game the Wranglers mixed a variety
of spinners end-runs lino crashes
and laterals to keep tho enemy on tho
defense. Tho Brown county lads were
equal to tho occasion however and
nblo to repulse each drive just short
of tho pay station.
Schumann Star
Individual stars for the Jackets were
Schumann in tho backfield and Mc-
Queen and Edwards in tho front wall.
In fact Schumann mado nearly all of
tho gains from scriramago for How-
ard Payne. McQueen and Edwards
mombers of the Brand all-conference
squad got 75 percent of the enemy's
tackles and played hcads-up offensivo
ball.
McCollum was the big noiso for
Simmons. Stepping into a ball-toting
roll for tho first time this season
tho Estelllno flash piled up yards of
ground. Creighton also put up a
pert game in tho backfield. In the
lino Winters and Hucstis at ends and
Ncely and Bentley at guards played
their usual flashy defensive games.
First downs were 9 to 4 in favor of
the Cowboys.

Tho Cowboys deserve a lot of praise
for their great playing ngainst the
Yellow Jackets. For ono time out of
tho last several years the Jackets
wrce really OUT PLAYED but the
old JINX is still on and tho Howard
Payne boys get all tho praiso while
tho Cowhands havo to sit back and
get the jeers although they whipped
the Jackets all over the field.
Coming from a Howard Payne man
this ought to sound pretty good.
"Those Cowboys should have beaten
the Jackets at least .three touch-
downs." Those are my sentiments
exactly but since the game is a thing
of tho past and wo have only to look
forward to next year let's get behind
tho Cowboys and help them win their
ixth straight basketball champion-
hip. While wo are in tho mood to speak
football let's sec about a few of the
unheralded stars. The first on docket
would bo "Scatter" Winters one of
the greatest ends the Texas confer-
ence has ever had. That boy is good
enough for anybody's All-Conference
team. If ho isn't chosen there will
be a great mistake. Another is Jako
Bentley who is rated by Pete Caw-
thorn to be the best lineman his
team has met this year and if Mr.
Cnwthorn is not UP in the business
then no one out on the plains knows
anything about this game of football.
Speaking of Conch Cawthorn re-
minds mo that his Matadors arc a
pretty good bunch of ball players and
the Cowhands should not feel so bad-
ly over their defeat at Lubbock on
Nov. 11. Kansas State whose coach
is Bo McMillan a former All-Amcr-
TOUCH-0
Coach Charles Anderson an-
nounces that there is still time for
anyone interested in playing
touch-0 in tho newly organized
league to sign up. Rosters will be
held open through Monday.
Rules for the league have been
posted on the front entrances to
the Corral and Marston gymnas-
ium. lean has one of the best teams in the
United States nnd when the Tech
boys stepped out and beat them C-0.
and thoroughly whipped them a lot
worse than they did the Cowboys wo
should be proud of our team.
Now that basketball has started
let's sec if wo can get that old Sim-
mons spirit going and REALLY
BACK the Cowboys this year. This
is the last year for about five of
them and if we can win tho cham-
pionship again this year it will make
tho sixth straight for Simmons.
If number counts for anything then
the freshmen will have one of the
best teams that ever played on the
hardwood in Abilene. There were 38
out for the first workout. Incidentally
some of them come highly recom-
mended as basketball men. Sounds
good for they will have to take the
places of some mighty good men next
year.
Let's all hope that tho basketeers
get that EXTENDED trip during tho
holidays that they are planning on.
They really deserve it if a team ever
did. The coaches are doing every
thing that they can to get it arranged
and if they do it will bo a big boost
for Simmons because those Cowhands
will do us justice anywhere.
Sco you next week and MAYBE I
will have some real good nows for
you.

Cowboys Tie Bills
In Final Grid Clash
Thanksgiving Day
Teams Battle To 0-0 Score
In Slow and Ragged
Skirmish
In n Blow ragged game the Sim-
mons Cowboys nnd the Daniel Baker
Hill Billies fought to a scoreless tie
as a feoture of the Billies homecom-
ing in Brownwood Thanksgiving day.
The Cowboys playing their poorest
game of the season minus tho ser-
vices of Cope Hucstis nnd Bentley
regulars threatened tho Baker goal
at least five times but in each in-
stance lacked tho necessary punch to
put It over. Four times tho locals
pounded their wny to tho Billle 4
yard stripe with first down only to
lose n chance for scoring by passing
over the goal line twice nnd missing
two field goals.
The Hill Billies threatened to score
only once driving to the Wranglers
3 yard line. A fumble on the third
piny which was recovered by Sim-
mons ended their bid to score how-
ever. The feature of the game was a 45
yard return of the opening kick-off
of the second half by Bill Gibson Dan-
iel Baker quarterback.
Long Drive
Peo kicked-off to the Hill Billies to
open the game. Unable to gain tho
Presbyterians punted and the long-
est and only sustained drive of the
nftcrnoon began. The Ranchers took
the ball and marched straight up the
field to the BIHie 4 yard marker
where they were suddenly and gustily
stopped.
For Simmons Winters was the most
brilliant player on the field. The captain-elect
had a big afternoon get-
ting Daniel Baker backs for numer-
ous losses. Seed subbing for Cope
McLcod and J. B. Neely also played
good games. Creighton Thompson
nnd McCollum In the backfield turn-
ed in fair performances.
Wren big tackle and Snodgrnss
guard were the individual stars for
the Hill Billies. In the backfield
Gibson nnd Gipson the latter a Sim-
mons cast-off took high honors.
