Kittens Beat Old Glory
O'Brien Thurs., Mon.
RULE - The Rule Kittens
tuning up for the district tour-
nament next week beat Old
Glory and O’Brien Thursday
and Monday respectively.
The Kittens working the
press effectively, ran by Old
Glory by the score of 44-32.
Larry Barbee scored 12 and
Calvin Stegemoeller 11 to pace
the Kitten win.
With a definite height advan-
tage, the Kittens were able to
out rebound Old Glory and work
the fast break for easy baskets.
The press and the fast break
were again the best weapons
in the Kittens 37-34 triumph
over O’Brien.
Jumping to a quick 8-0 lead
in the first quarter, the Kittens
were never really threatened
despite the closeness of the
score. The last three minutes
of the ball game was played
by the second team after the
starters had built a 37-25 lead.
O’Brien’s man to man press
cut the lead to 37-34 with 24
seconds left and Rule in pos-
session of the ball. A violation
gave O’Brien the ball with 17
seconds to go. Three shots were
taken by O’Brien, none of which
fell through the hoop. But the
officials spotted a foul on one of
the Kittens on the last shot giv-
ing O’Brien two free throws with
only two seconds left. The first
one was short and the second
bounced away no good. In the
scramble for the rebound the
clock ran out and the Kittens
chalked up victory number 7
against 3 defeats.
Stegemoeller and Barbee
again topped Rule scorers with
15 and 11 points respectively.
But it was the all around team
play of the Kittens and their
hustle which gave them the win.
Tony Thomas, Don Hisey,
Larry Simpson, and Rob Kitt-
ley played well defensively and
made the Kittens zone press re-
sults in numerous turnovers.
They also fed the ball in to
Stegemoeller and to Barbee on
the fast break.
The district tournament be-
gins Mondays, and will be played
at Paint Creek rather than at
Rule as was previously an-
nounced.
The Kittens will not play until
Tuesday at 5:10 p.m. and open
against Goree. The Rule girls
play Goree at 4:00 Tuesday.

bling, and passing take a large
part of the period. Relays are
run, and some time is spent
in game like scrimmages.

my Macias, Corky Wilson,
