US Senator Blakley
On Aid To Education
US Senator William A. Bla-
kley believes a tax break for
parents is needed to further
the education of American
youth.
Consideration should be giv-
en the average parents who
are struggling to put their
children through school, es-
pecially high school and col-
lege, Sen. Blakley declared.
' He called for additional in-
come tax exemptions for such
families among the measures
he is advocating for better edu-
cational opportunities. He urg-
ed a $400 exemption for each
dependent child enrolled in
high school, and said he also
would work for a $1,200 ex-
emption for each dependent
enrolled in a college or uni-
versity.
Sen Blakley has set out a
cleat-cut aid-to-education pro-
gram that would help the
schools without the danger of
federal control.
“I am opposed—I always
will be opposed—to federal
interference in our public
school system.” Senator Bla-
kley declared. “But it is not
enough just to oppose. We
must provide the finest facili-
ties available. We must have
the best trained teachers and
they should be paid commen-
surately with the wonderful
contribution they are making
toward the education of our
growing population.”
As the alternative to a fed-
eral aid program, Sen. Blak-
ley proposes that the states
retain five per cent of all fed-
eral income taxes collected in
each state. The money would
be used for improvement of
the school system.
“The amount of funds to be
retained would be sufficient
to meet the needs at no great-
