by Roy Salinas
Staff Writer
BENAVIDES - After three
weeks of trying, Toby Cantu and
the Benavides Eagles came up with
a win on Friday, Sept. 16. The
Cantu-led Eagles scored a 23-18
win over the winless Banquete
Bulldogs.
Cantu, who has rushed for over
100 yards in every game this sea-
son, doubled his output to 216 yards
to lead the Eagles to their first win.
He capped his performance late in
the fourth quarter when he avoided
two Bulldog ladders and ran the
ball 72 yards for a touchdown to
give Benavides the lead for good.
Assuring the win for the Eagles
was Ismael Villa who intercepted
the ball with 17 seconds left in the
game and returned it 45 yards for a
score to give the Eagles the 25-18
win over the Bulldogs.
After a scoreless first quarter,
the Bulldogs went up on the
scoreboard first on a 24 yard pass
from Rudy Trevino to David Val-
dez. An attempt for a two point
conversion failed, leaving the score
6-0 in the second quarter.

Vaqueros bow to Refugio, 40-7
by Alfredo E. Cardenas
Editor/Publisher
SAN DIEGO - State power-
house Refugio rolled into town on
Friday. Sept. 16, and for three quar-
ters the San Diego Vaqueros
showed they could play with the
best. But the Bobcats’ size and
talent finally wore out the Vaque-
ros and they exploded for three
fourth quarter touchdowns to give
them a 40-7 win.
The Vaqueros, who actually led
at one time, could not overcome
the Bobcats and actually helped
them with key fumbles leading to
easy Refugio scores. The Vaquero
defense, however, held touted Toya
Jones in check, keeping him from
being a factor in the game.
The San Diego defense did not
keep a good eye on Tavares Garza
who scored three touchdowns.
Garza opened the scoring in the
first quarter when he took it in from
the three. The score was set-up by
a fumble by San Diego quarter-
back Adan Perez. The Vaqueros
lost the ball on fumbles four times.
. Aided by two key penalties, the
Vaqueros came right back and
scored on a fourth down 14 yard
pass from Perez to James Rodriguez
whoheldontotheball in the corner
of the end zone. Kelly Perez kicked
the PAT to give San Diego a 7-6
second quarter lead.
The Bobcats came back to take
the lead before the half when Garza
ran it in from the eight. Jones scored
on a two point conversion giving
Refugio a 14-7 lead.
Garza scored again to open the
third quarter after another Perez
fumble set up a short Refugio drive.
•'The scbte covered 14 yaranmd the
PAT failed leaving the score at 20-
7 at the end of three.
A trio of Bobcat runners scored
touchdowns in the final quarter.
First came John Kelley who
punched it from the one and Joel
Kay making the PAT. Then Reggie
Hollins raced for 46 yards for a
score and Kay again made the PAT
kick. Hollins rushed for 133 yards
for the evening.
Late in the quarter a host of
clean jerseys came into the game
for Refugio eager to show their
stuff. Royce Green scored die final
touchdown from five yards out.
The Vaqueros, now 1-2, hope
to even their record on Friday when
they host Freer for the second time
this year. The Bucks provided the
Vaqueros their lone winof the year,
by the thinnest of margins.

day. Sept. 16. The Bucks go to San
Diego on Friday to try to avenge a
15-14 loss of two weeks ago.
The usually high octane Freer
offense was completely shut off by
the Longhorns. The Bucks were
held to a mere four yards rushing
and 43 yards through the air.
Freer st ayed in the game through
the first half, trailing only by a
touchdown after Trey Moffett
scored from the the second quarter.
The Longhorns scored touch-
downs in each of the second half
quarters to extend their lead. Chad
McNeill scored from the 11 in the
third quarter and Lee Alaniz took a
pass from Moffett to convert the
two point try. In the final quarter,
Ruben Alvear took a six yard toss
from Moffett and Tony Zuniga
kicked the PAT to end the scoring.
