Sheriff to keep cash and truck
CANTON - Van Z*xk *
County Sheriff Travis
Shafer war allowed to keep
al of a catche of $14,040
and a pickup truck confm
cated in a drug raid hut
March after meeting with
the county cotnmiarionm
Monday
The money. $14,010.
and the 1976 Chevrolet
pickup were both turned
oxer to the aherifTs depar
tment Auguat 21, after
being ruled to be confis-
cated property.
The money and truck,
along with over 20 pounds
of amphetamine, waa con-
fiscated during a March 2
raid on a drug lab in Ben
Wheeler Following the
conviction# of the person#
arrested in connection with
the raid and the cloeing of
the criminal cases, the
money and the truck were
turned over to hi# depar-
' tment by the district court,
. Shafer explained.
■ If the truck had a Hen
•against it, Shafer ex-
plained. the county would
be forced to tell the truck
to pay off the lien. Aa it has
no lien against it, the truck
may be used by the depart-
ment, Shafer said. "The
motor sounds good, and it
'has new tires,” he re-
ported. ”1 think it will be a
good vehicle to use ”
The money is stashed
away in the county's depot
kory, and County Treas-
urer Shirley Morgan has
the checkbook, Shafer ad-
ded. His question was if the
money was considered
public funds or the proper
ty of his department.
County Judge Sam Hil-
liard noted that the court
order declaring the money
and truck to be confiscated
items turned disposition
over to the law enforce-
ment agency in charge,
and that meant the county
sheriffs department.
Shafer noted that the
county was entitled to use
up to 20 percent of the
money, but only for drug
treatment or rehabilitation
programs. "The rest of
that can be used for 'other
criminal activity,’ but I
don't know exactly what
that entails," Shafer said.

Hilliard and Shafer
agreed to meet with Dis-
trict Attorney Tommy
Wallace to check on the
legal uses of the money.
In another cooperative
agreed to take under ad
riaement a contract to lease
land near the Canton Old
City Lake as a she for a
new county library
building.
The contract is being
prepared by the Canton
city attorney, Edith Elliott,
president of the Friends of
the Van Zandt County
Library, told the court.
"The city has agreed to
furnish the land if the
county will agree to lease
the building when and if
we get a building,” Mrs.
Elliott explained.
The building needs to be
about 10,000 square feet in
size, she said. “We have
seven years to raise the
money and get plans star-
ted,” she added "We were
hoping to get some sub-
stantial private donations
or a grant, but if we don’t
have a plan, we won't be
able to get any grant," she
said.
Hilliard noted that the
county would have to
check with Wallace “to see
if we can legally do that,”'
but the court agreed to
take the contract under
advisement for study when
completed.
In a related action, Mrs.
Elliott requested a raise in
salary for librarian Dor-
othy Slaughter and library
clerk Barbara Cook, amo-
unting to $3,523 over the
proposed library budget.
Mrs. Elliott noted that
Mrs. Slaughter, an 11)4-
year county employee,
"should get the tame salary

need to open shop. ”
The sidewalks were
poured Thursday, and the
parking lot was slated for
paving Friday, Ingrim
said.
In the hospital itself, the
new wafl-mounced lights
for the patient rooms are
ready to install, admin-
istrator Windefl McCord
said Thursday. New blood
pressure machines will be
installed along with the
lights above each bed. star-
ting next week, he said.
After the new lights are
installed, the rooms will be
painted and new carpeting
installed, he added. Twen-
ty new electronic beds are
also slated to replace old
mechanical beds, and they
should he added in the
next couple of months,
McCord said.
Appointments at the
new clinic are being ac-
cepted now. Ingrim said,
and he reported that the
clinic's telephone number

clinic will be open Monday

EDGEWOOD - Two
persBfris appeared at a
special public hearing on
the proposed Edgewood
Independent School Dis-
trict tax rate Monday
night, but neither one
spoke against the proposed
rate.
The tax rate, §5 cents
per $100 valuation, was
approved by the school
trustees, who also agreed to
offer a 40 percent home-
stead exemption. Both the
tax rate and the exemption
remain the tame as last
year.
The new tax rate, altho-
ugh the tame as last year’s
rate, is effectively 6.25 per-
cent above last year's rate,
as property values in the
district went up, Superin-
tendent Ellis Carroll noted.
He also pointed out that
this was the last year that a
40 percent homestead
exemption could be gran-
ted, ft it drops to 30 per-
cent next year.
The trustees, noting the
lack of public participation
in a special tax hearing last
Monday night, passed both
measures and adjourned in
less than 20 minutes. Most
took the opportunity to
visit the elementary school
to take part in the district's
“Meet the Teacher Night,”
which will take the place of
the annual open house set
in March.
