Patriotic Talk
Given To Rotary
Past President Jimmie
McKay presided over the
Tuesday noon luncheon of
Kermit Rotary in the absence
of President Buck Haggard.
McKay was presented with a
Rotary plaque recording his
recently completed year as
Rotary president.
At the request of Rotarian
Gerald McGuire, Russell Smith,
minister of First Christian
Church, presented an
“inspiring and patriotic” talk
appropriate to the observance
of Independence Day.
He pointed out that “the
United States of America did
not just happen, it was created
by the blood, sweat and tears
of patriotic men.”
Fifty-six of the men fighting
for the creation of our country
risked their lives and estates in
signing the Declaration of
Independence, “because they
believed in justice and •
freedom,” Smith declared.
“If , America is in trouble
today, it is because our
leadership has faltered and we
have squandered our great
material resources in failing to
follow the principles that made
this country great,” he added.
“America has become a
great nation through the
leadership of great men who
believed in God and the Ten
Commandments,” Minister
Smith said.
In concluding his talk,
Smith added that the failing of
our country is largely due to
the apathy of the average
citizen.
