[Stone Ranch House]

Description: Photograph of a "casa mayor" that was built in the 1840s at Rancho San Fransisco in Zapata County. The hipped tin roof was added in the 1950's to protect the house from damage which could be caused by heavy rains in the area. There are stone "bancas" around the house and "troneras" (gunports) by each door and in the center of the facing wall.
