Caption on back of photo, "Some of the best looking parts of the wrecked part of the business section. This is in the block back of Water Street. It is so small it doesn't show up much. I believe this is where the laundry stood. It's rather hard to recognize the wrecks of places even if you were familiar with the location before the storm. You almost don't recognize your own home." [Temple Opera House]

Description: Photo of the Temple Opera House which was located on the corner of Avenue A and Oak Street in downtown Palestine. As per the 1898-1899 city directory, the manager was a man named W.E. Swift. The building has since been destroyed. It once housed not only the Masonic Hall, but numerous businesses on the ground floor. Note the base for the statue of John H. Reagan, that now resides in Reagan Park.

Pat-Ike

Description: An inscription at the bottom of the photograph reads "Pat--Ike." The "Ike" presumably refers to Ike Zablosky, who came from Russia to Philadelphia in 1890. He and his wife, Fanny Jaffee, later moved to Mineral Wells for health reasons where he became involved in the fur-and-hide business. Zablosky once described the northwest part of Palo Pinto County as a "'Possum kingdom"; hence the first flood-control lake on the Brazos River was named Possum Kingdom Lake.
