Bench Plane.

Description: Patent for a new and improved bench plane. This design "consists in a stirrup pivoted to the sides of the plane in such a manner that the traverse piece of the stirrup passes through a transverse groove in the under surface of the plane, this groove increasing in height toward the rear of the plane, so that when the plane is drawn backward it will be slightly raised by this stirrup, so that the cutting-edge of the plane-iron cannot slide on the board being planed" (lines 10-19).

Animal-Stock.

Description: Patent for an improved animal-stock that holds animals during branding, dehorning, castrating, &c. It looks like an open-topped cage where the operator puts the animal, and the animal cannot move. The invention is on a platform and can tip to one side and a chain is tied from the top of the machine to the bottom of the frame.

Description: Copy of a letter from Sam Houston to his friend Joseph L. Ellis of Grand Cane at his plantation "Pleasant Lawn." Discusses Judge Worsham, the health of the Houston family, and neighbors. This letter is purported to be a hoax and forgery, as multiple copies exist. It was found folded inside a book that was published in the late 1800s and given to the library over sixty years ago.
