CONVENTION CENTER STAND-UP......18 MAY 67.......... B SIGHT & BLOXOM
MAN ON CtiviBA: Tarrant County Auditor J.N. "star" Williams
has been quoted as seriously suggesting the City of Fort
Worth take over the new convention center, now under con-
struction.
Several weeks ago, Williams jokingly--we
thought--remarked to this reporter, "Why don't we give
the center to the city?" Likeki him, we laughed.
Yesterday, a Fort Worth newspaper published
about the same remark, but it wasn't taken as a joke, and
before the day was over, the story was that the proposal
had been favorably received by city officials.
The chairman of the convention center's board
of managers, Arlington Mayor Tom Vandergriff, was
approached :bout the matter:
(INTERVIEXU)
members of Commissioners Court also had some
observations about Williams' proposal. County Judge
Howard Green, for one, told us, "It's ridiculous and silly
to even consider'it." Commissioners Rosco Minton and C.H.
"Punch" Wright said the idea "could have merit." But,
Minton added, "I don't know enough about it to commit
myself." Commissioner Bryan Henderson said, "The people
entrusted the county to build it. We shouldn't shirk the
responsibility." And, Commissioner Dick Lewis pointed
out, "For once, I agree wit# Henderson."
Fort Worth Mayor Pro-Tem Bill Sarsgard, an
attorney, said, "Off-hand, I see some legal and practical
problems involved. The city ought to study it, if the
auditor is really serious about it."
Unavailable for late comment, the auditor left
town vesterdav. Russ Bloxom reporting.
