The Institute was characterized by a wide variety of multi-
media presentations, small group activities, and visits to five
area museums, as well as individual and team assignments for the
participants. Presentations included, but were not limited to,
theoretical discussions on the disciplines of art production, art
history, art criticism, and aesthetics. Several presentations
featured a particular medium or style of art. In an attempt to
present the broader view of art, especially as it relates to
kindergarten and first grade students, interdisciplinary
presentations and activities centered around music, dance, and
creative drama. Multicultural education was the focus of a major
part of one day, and a natural and integral part of many other
presentations. A number of activities and discussions centered
around the strong connections art makes with other areas of the
curriculum.
A number of features about the first North Texas Summer
Institute make it unique. The involvement of five major museums is
at the top of the list. The participants spent a whole day at the
Dallas Museum of Art, and half days at the Amon Carter Museum, the
Kimbell Museum, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the
Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. The
agenda at each museum included a tour of the museum collection and
an introduction to its education department, as well as activities
