Notes

Transcription: A group called "Parents United For Emotional Health" appeared before the Fort Worth School board last night to complain about sex education being taught in the schools. The spokesmen-Warren Bower- in his presentation said, "In Fort Worth we now have what is called health education. Many students call it the sex class and can hardly wait to enroll." The group contends that the classes are more pornography than education and fears an increase in immorality. Bower charged that at McLean Junior High school a representative of the Planned Parenthood organization was asked to speak and that contraceptives were passed for the class members to examine. He also charged that at Carter-Riverside High School booklets were issues giving details of physiological changes and "large pornographic pictures were furnished." Bower concluded by saying We believe God holds parents responsible for what their children are taught, and sex education in school interferes with what parent's right to teach this subject which is so private. Following the presentation Board member Rev. John R. Leatherberry asked that the teachers be given a chance to tell their side of the story and that the board be given a report of its next meeting. Bower told the board that sex education should be taught in the home and the church. Board president Loyd Turner said, "Sex education is not being taught well either by the home or the church and this problem is being dumped into the lap of the Fort Worth school system. In other action, the board refused to give its approval to the material to be used in teaching --- minority races. Board member Rev. John Leatherbury --- didn't ---the proposed materials were complete and were not representative of all minority groups. The Board also discussed re-organization of the city's high schools. Several board members expressed reservations about the plan to allow four schools to try an "Open Campus" plan next year. Tomorrow several board members will go to Beeville to examine a similar plan and the board will vote on the matter at its next meeting. And, the board approved extending the National School Lunch program into the second semester. A member of the Dever Ave. PTA, Louis Garcia, said the parents in his school were not satisfied with the program. He said the food was not well prepared and the parents were upset because their children were not given a choice of foods, but rather were forced to eat a plate lunch.
