Citizens of the Johnson County town of Rio Uista
tonight voted to retain their independents school
district by a vote of 279 to 85.
For several weeks now, the controversy over the
Rio Vista school system has kept the small town
divided. Long time friends found themselves aligned
in different camps, and one Rio Vistian reported
that feelings over the matter had risen so high
people were not speaking to each other in church.
It all began when a group of Rio Vistians, alarmed
the
at ever increasing school taxes, formed citizen's
committee for Better Schools. They circulated a
petition calling for the abolishment of the Rio
Vista School District, and garnered
enoght signatures to force today's election. Roy
