Dear Professor Lucas: February 3, 1981
I am delighted to write in support of Claudia Betti. We at Holt
are proud to be the publishers of DRAWING: A CONTEMPORARY APPROACH,
which has made a genuine splash in the year since publication. It
is an innovative book, unique in its emphasis on techniques,
integration of classic and contemporary renderings, and use of
student drawings. Its sales success reflects its widespread apeal
with teachers of drawing. Although the actual numbers are confidential,
I can report that this book outsold all other drawing titles on our
list last year, including Bernard Chaet's ART OF DRAWING and
Daniel Mendelowitz's GUIDE TO DRAWING.
You expressed an interest in the schools at which the book is being
used, and a list of some of the major ones is attached. (The full
list would be ten times as long.) You will note both the quality
of the institutions and the geographic breadth of the book's appeal.
Finally, I would like to pass on the unsolicited comment of a professor
at a four-year college in Missouri who was writing to obtain an
Instructors' Manual: "Your comuany is to be commended for publishing
this book. It is in my opinion one of the finest drawing texts to
come out in a long time. It is refreshing to see reproductions of works
by students and artist-faculty from North Texas State University as
well as works by widely known contemporary artists and the masters."
I think this comment speaks for itself. This is the most significant
new drawing text published in recent years.
Please feel free to call on me if I can provide any additional assistance.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Hitchings
