Kent State. They wanted to use the classrooms for
discussions of international, national and campus
issues.Shortly after the rally began, a university spokesman
told the crowd that President Norman Hackerman was
willing to meet with five or six student representa-
tives in his office and discuss their demands. This
seemed like a logical thing to do. But a young woman
grabbed the microphone and demanded an end to what
she called "high tower diplomacy." She wanted
Hackerman to leave his office and come outside,
where the students could hear him answer a list of
demands. The request was sent to Hackerman's office
and he declined the invitation.
